W... W... W... Wednesdays ~ June 5, 2013

W... W... W... Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB of Should be Reading. To play along, just answer the following questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you'll read next?

What am I currently reading? I am currently reading Lady Harriette by P. O. Dixon. I'm really enjoying it so far! It is third book in the series, which To Have His Cake (and Eat it Too) is the first. This story is about Colonel Fitzwilliam and Lady Harriette.

What did I recently finish reading?  This week I read a few books. First, I finished reading Pirates and Prejudice by Kara Louise. Loved it! I'll have a review up in a couple of weeks. Plus, an interview with Kara and a giveaway! Next, because I couldn't wait any longer to read this, I read and finished Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry. It was so good! I found it to be an edgy, emotional read. I also read, To Have His Cake (and Eat it Too) by P. O. Dixon. A re-read for me. I can't get enough of Mr. Darcy - as you well know! ;)

What do I think I'll be reading next? I think I'll be reading The Rules of Engagement by Jillian Leigh.

What are you reading?

  1. Hi Candy! I think I have Pushing the Limits on my kindle, been meaning to read it for ages.

Well the last new thing I read was Darcy's Decision by Maria Grace. I wasn't sure at first what type of book it was, whether a prequel or variation and at first I found it a bit slow and the characters generally unlikeable but then a big secret came out and it picked up so I really enjoyed it then! I meant to move on to part two but somehow I ended up rereading Mr Darcy's Letter by Abigail Reynolds, love that one.

So next up is either Part 2 of the Given Good Principles series or Lady Harriette. I've read the first two books and I wasn't a big fan of Lady H, but she has switched allegiance to Team Lizzy so I will give her another chance. Also, from the excerpt I read there appears to be trouble afoot and I am confident that she will kick butt, which I look forward to seeing :)

    1. Hi Ceri! I really liked 'Pushing the Limits', you should read it. It was a book I picked up from the LA Festival of Books for free! I didn't know I'd find a booth handing out free books, but I did! :D Score!

I haven't read the book between 'To Have His Cake' and 'Lady Harriette'. I hope I'm not missing anything. We'll see! But, yes, I think Lady H can definitely kick butt!! I like her feisty attitude!

    2. I don't think you'd miss much story-wise, but you'll probably have a different view of Lady H.

  2. Hi Candy! Can't wait to read you review for Pirates and Prejudice!

I just finished While We Were Watching Downton Abbey by Wendy Wax and I really enjoyed it. It is a perfect beach read. Right now I am reading Bluebells in the Mourning. I am LOVING it so far! I am also reading Gone With The Wind. It has been sitting on my bookshelf for ages and I kept putting it off. I set myself a goal for this summer and so far so good. Next I will be reading either Pirates and Prejudice or The Best Intentions by Candice Hern.

*There is just not enough time to read everything I want!!=)

    1. Hi Kelli! I read 'Gone With The Wind' when I was about 16, maybe a little older. I wasn't much of a reader back then - hardly read at all! My best friend and her sister would read it (aloud to each other, I think) every summer. I wanted to be like them so much, so I bought the book too. It took me a while before I attempted it, a couple of years. One of my mother's friends told me I would never read it - it was too long. Well, that did it, I made sure I read it! :) I still have that book. I've never read it again though. haha.

I hope you enjoy 'Pirates and Prejudice' as much as I did!

  3. Ah, I'm a day late for W. W. W. ! O.o

The last book I read was Bluebells in the Mourning, which I loved. I'm currently about halfway through To Have His Cake and I'm starting to enjoy it a little more. I had put off reading this one because I didn't think I'd like this Darcy but I find that I'm having more issues with Lizzy. Next up I want to read What He Would Not Do and then Lady Harriette.

    1. Hi Monica! I'm glad to have you here anyway! :)

I was going back and forth about reading 'What He Would Not Do' before reading Lady 'Harriette'. Jakki, felt 'Lady Harriette' could be read as a stand alone, so I kinda wanted to see if it could be. I did re-read 'To Have His Cake', I read it a couple of years ago. I'm still not sure how much I'm missing. It seems like Dixon is going over a lot of what happened in book 2. We'll see.

I'm glad you like 'Bluesbells in the Mourning'!

  4. I started the Lady Harriette book earlier and the worst thing she did in the last book has been covered in this one. What is your problem with Lizzy in To Have His Cake? I wasn't wildly keen on Lizzy in this one to be honest, she is a bit lacking in some way but I can't put my finger on it. I quite liked Darcy actually. Although he is really selfish and a rake, aside from being oblivious, it was a refreshing change, I'd read a few books where he was in touch with his feelings which is all wrong.

Bluebells in the Mourning is next on my list to buy, everybody seems to love it!

  5. *spoiler warning* lol

Keeping in mind I've only read half, I just felt like Lizzy's actions didn't really match up with how I feel she would act if she'd been through the death of her father & sister, and the separation of her family. The more I think about it, maybe I'm being overly picky (which is kind of unlike me)? I feel like the storytelling is more of an overview instead of delving too deep. Does that make sense? For example, even before Darcy turned away the man who was interested in courting her, she had already decided she wasn't interested because she "wasn't attracted to him." Her family is penniless, she and Jane are working, and she doesn't even *consider* a man who is a kind, intelligent, and handsome, with money and an estate? Maybe the old Lizzy, who was all about marrying for love alone. I felt like she was too snippy with him at first, considering he provided her with the best possible job she could have, under the circumstances and was pretty generous and kind to her. I don't know...now that it's much more obvious there's a mutual affection and the pretense of her being a companion is all but gone, I'm liking it better.

When I think of a "rake" I think of someone who has multiple mistresses or messes with young innocent ladies, and Darcy really isn't that. Even Antoinette is exclusively his so it's not overly skeezy. He is selfish, though, and snobby. I liked the scenes where he teaches Lizzy to ride horses (sexy!) & later totally disses Caroline! (haha!) ;) I don't mind a more sensitive or introspective Darcy, depending on the story, but I've read some where I felt like it was taken too far.

  6. I did have a bit of a problem with that part too, Monica. Given Elizabeth's circumstances I think she should have at least considered marrying that man you are talking about. Darcy can certainly turn him away, but I think Lizzy should have still considered him. But I did like this Elizabeth's spunk in spite of everything that has happened. I love it when she challenges Darcy! LOL!
