J Dawn King, author of "A Father's Sins" ~ Guest Post, Excerpt & Giveaway!

Hey everyone! I've invited J Dawn King, author of A Father's Sins, to visit us today, and she was kind enough to bring gifts along with her! It's a pleasure to have you here, and thank you for your generosity!

I am delighted to accept your invitation, Candy. It has been such a wonderful roller-coaster ride so far.

Probably because my book is about how the bad decisions of a father can impact their children, I am most often asked about my development of the secondary characters. Even though Darcy and Elizabeth are the stars of the show, people like the Bingleys and Fitzwilliams, play major supporting roles. These characters had to become real in my mind; what they looked like, what they wore, how they responded. I ended up falling in love with Charles Bingley, Colonel Fitzwilliam, and his father, Lord Matlock. One reviewer said of my book, “God bless the Gardiners!” Yes, I love them too.

Mr. Charles Bingley: He became a cross between a young David Beckham, Cary Elwes, and Sam Heughan. He would be kind, good-natured, fun, and regularly teased by the older Fitzwilliam brothers and Darcy who treated him as a kid brother.

Colonel Fitzwilliam: I imagined a 30 year old Gerard Butler and Richard Armitage combination who was ruggedly handsome, a born commander of men, and sometimes impetuous. How could you not love this man? Impossible!

Lord Matlock: Pure Sean Connery. A gentle man who filled the room with his presence with white hair, a deep gravelly voice, and eyes that could pierce you to your soul.

Here is an excerpt from chapter eleven where we find Lady Matlock (who was very Helen Mirren). Please enjoy getting to know her a bit better. Mr. Bennet had just had a very public confrontation at Netherfield. It was witnessed by the Hursts, the Fitzwilliams, and the Bingleys.

~o0o~

In the drawing room, Miss Bingley could not help but snicker at the damage done to Miss Elizabeth’s reputation with the Fitzwilliam and Darcy family. Lady Matlock heard. The Lady was like the Darcys in nature, quiet and reserved. However, she was not a member of one of the most respected members of society for nothing.

“And, what about this situation do you find so amusing, Miss Bingley?” Until this point, Lady Matlock had chosen to stand back and allow her husband and sons to take charge. However, she recognized that these two women coveted a higher position in society and had determined that the Darcys would help them to attain that position. This was a familiar game to anyone who had reached the first circles of the ton. Though common enough, it was not palatable to Lady Matlock, especially since her niece and nephew were the targets of exploitation.

“Excuse me, Lady Matlock,” said Miss Caroline Bingley quickly, “I merely had something in my throat. I am certain that a cup of tea will be the answer. Would you like me to pour for you too?”

“Miss Bingley, do not underestimate my intelligence or my experience in dealing with women of your caliber. That young woman, whom you seek to demean in my eyes, is now performing a service in behalf of my family that will not soon be forgotten. She has proved her value and her valor in these most fearful times. You both would benefit by imitating her attitude and actions.” With that, she swept out the door and up to her nephew’s room.

~o0o~

When you close your eyes and imagine these secondary characters, who or what do they look like to you? Please feel free to answer if you chose to post a comment.

    1. Vesper, thank you for your comment and for the Tweet. Best of wishes for the giveaway. Do you think of either Caroline in the 1995 or 2005 movie versions or someone else when she comes to mind? I would like to know please.

    2. the 1980 version, but then that is my favourite of the miniseries or films, I think all the characters in that version are better than the others. Yes even the Darcy is better than Colin Firth - did I really say that!

    3. Such a bold statement so early in the morning. I need to watch that version again. Thanks for the comment.

    4. I watched the 1980 version just a couple of weeks ago (in the UK, it's available on YouTube, don't know about anywhere else in the world). Darcy was played by David Rintoul and was my favourite until 1995. Looking back on the 1980 version, the acting seems a bit wooden to me now. Mr. Rintoul definitely fitted the part in looks and did proud and haughty very well.

    5. I can stream it here from Amazon Prime so can watch it while we are in the US. We don't return to Ecuador for 3 more weeks. Plenty of time. Thanks so much Vesper and Anji for the recommendation. Don't know how we missed it.

    6. I need to watch the 1980 version. I don't remember watching it, but I'm sure I have!

Now, let me say, Matthew Macfadyen is my favorite Darcy! hmmm...love him! :)

    7. Matthew M has such wonderful presence on the screen. The intro he does in The Three Muskateers is marvelous. His work varies so much. Great actor.

    3. I am thinking Angelina Jolie. She makes a good Maleficent, so quite probably she'd do a good job. As for Darcy, MM all the way. I like the shy reticent type. My husband is that way around strangers and so people think he's haughty. My son is the same. They are, xoincidebtally, descendants of the original D'Arcy who came over from France with William the Conquerer.

    4. Sorry...big typo...coincidentally....dumb virtual keyboard and autocorrect.

    5. Yes!! Matthew for me too! Oh! That's so cool they are descendants of the original D'Arcys!

  3. I've never heard of Sam Heughan before so I'm gonna check it out. I see from IMDB that he is starring in Outlander mini-series and several other TV projects that I have never heard of. Anyway, I think James McAvoy would make a fantastic Charles Bingley and I agree with your choice of Richard Armitage as Colonel Fitzwilliam. I wonder from the excerpt who the other woman that Lady Matlock is referring to. Is it by chance Louisa Hurst?

Thanks for the generous giveaway, Dawn.

  4. Good catch! Yes, it is Mrs. Hurst. I've not heard of James McAvoy so will check him out now. Thanks for the suggestion and you are most welcome. Best wishes for the giveaway.

  5. Here, here, Vesper!

Ever since the 1995 dramatisation, I've always heard Anna Chancellor's voice as Miss Bingley. I thought she was excruciatingly wonderful in that role. As to your suggestions above, I can see where you're coming from with most of them except Sean Connery. As he always seems to retain the Scottish accent in whatever voice he's doing, I can't see him as Lord Matlock. What about Anthony Hopkins?

I've read the free sample of this from the Kindle Store and would definitely like to read more.

    1. Great suggestion, Anji. Funny thing about imagination. My Darcy always looks like Colin and sounds like Matthew. Lord Matlock could look like Sean and sound like Anthony. Hmmmmmm.... Will think about this. Thanks for your comment and best wishes for giveaway.

    2. Yes, that combination could work for Lord Matlock. My Darcy both looks and sounds like Colin, however.

    3. Just had a thought. In Death Comes to Pemberley, the Colonel was played by Tom Ward. Not sure if you've seen that in the US yet. Google images for "Tom Ward Colonel Fitzwilliam" and you'll see what I mean. He's done period drama before (Vanity Fair) and also a historical episode of Doctor Who. He looks rather good in those high pointed collars and a cravat and especially in a red coat!

      Delete
    4. Anji, you are the second person to comment about Tom Ward. I looked him up and agree he is a great Colonel. Haven't seen the movie as we live in Ecuador and are in the US for only six weeks. We go back home on June 19th. Not much time for watching TV. Especially when it is baseball season.

I've tried and tried to explain to my husband, John, how good a man looks in Regency clothes with no success. Jeans and a t-shirt with an occasional button-down.

      Delete
    5. By the way, Anji, who is your Darcy?

      Delete
    6. Hi again Joy. I'm afraid I can't yet get past Colin Firth. I see and hear him whenever I read an Austenesque novel or the original. It'll soon be 20 years since he played the role and I guess I should try to move on but he did set the bar very high. Although Matthew MacFadyen was OK, he just wasn't MY Darcy. Up until Mr Firth, David Rintoul from 1980 had been my favourite

If we're going to try to look forward, I expect Aiden Turner is out of the running now he's playing Ross Poldark, so speaking as a Game of Thrones fangirl, what about Richard Madden or possibly Kit Harington?

      Delete
    7. Oh my, oh my. I've penned all three gentlemen you mentioned to my Darcy board on Pinterest. Such handsome men and all have the Darcy curls. Thank you so much for the suggestions. I've heard of Game of Thrones but have not watched it so do not know of the actors. Might have to now. Glad you commented Anji.

      Delete
    8. Joy, the TV series Game of Thrones is a really good interpretation of A Song of Ice and Fire novels of George R.R. Martin and I have read all the ones published so far. Be warned though, that there are copious amounts of violence with associated red stuff flying around so if you're squeamish, it won't be for you! There is also rather a lot of nudity and something that has been nicknamed "sexposition" instead of exposition as quite a lot of plot points are explained in a way that is obvious from the nickname!

      Delete
    9. Thank you, Anji. I will pass on the series but thank you for the Mr. Darcy recommendations. Let me know if you think of more that I can pin. Swoon!

    1. Me too, Heidi. The fun parts are so much easier for me to write than the angst parts. The compromise scene later in the book is a hoot! I still laugh when I read it. I liked Colonel Fitzwilliam before I wrote this, but fell head over heels after he reacted to Caroline's failed attempt with Darcy. Yes, I just shared a spoiler, but it is just too, too funny.

Since I first read P&P, I wanted to do exactly what Lady Matlock did to Miss Bingley. Thanks for your comment.

    1. Thank you for your comment. I just love it when someone agrees with me. The truth is that I usually picture Colin Firth with Matthew Macfadyen's voice. HOWEVER, someone pointed out Henry Cavill to me and, WOW! Very, very Darcyish. I have had Orlando Bloom, John Hamm, Jude Law, and a young Sean Connery recommended as well. That tells me that we each have our own Darcy to dream about, don't we?

Hope you do well with the giveaway.

  20. I just LOVE when Lady Matlock (or even Lady Catherine) puts Caroline in her place! Oh my goodness.

The characters' appearances in my head tend to shift somewhat, depending on the story and whether it's regency or modern. I almost never visualize MM and KK as Darcy & Lizzy, even when the author specifically states I should. My Darcy and Lizzy are like a mix of so many different people! lol

Caroline I always imagine as very Anna Chancellor-ish. Bingley varies - he could be Crispin Bonham Carter or Rupert Penry Jones or Prince Harry. Colonel Fitzwilliam looks like Dierks Bentley to me (in case you don't follow country music, he's a country singer). Though Gerard Butler could be a good fit, too!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Monica, it's funny that you should mention Prince Harry as he is on my Pinterest board with the others for Charles Bingley. I did think it would be a bit presumptuous to add the grandson of the Queen of England to my photo gallery here. I had not considered Dierks Bentley (we have all his CD's) for the Colonel. Yes, I can see it now.

By the way, in my mind, I AM Elizabeth Bennet. That means that in the past two years of reading variations, I have been steam-punk'ed, had life-threatening accidents, lost my memory, my father, my mother, and my sister, married a Duke and Mr. Collins, had a child out of wed-lock, been a governess, lost my mind, nursed a variety of people, and entertained the ton with my beautiful soprano and/or contralto voice. That is just about the one character that does not change as I read. Imagine that!

Rupert Penry Jones with his fashionable Regency togs truly makes me sigh. My husband was at sea for 21 years and he always came home sun-tanned, a bit scruffy, and smelling like diesel. Never has he donned a cravat and breeches after getting off the boats. Hmmmm... I think we missed out on something good.

Thanks so much for your comments and best wishes for the giveaway. Are you done with book #2 yet? I'm waiting!!!

    1. Loren, that is exactly the same movie I was thinking of for Sean Connery/Lord Matlock. He is charming, dignified, and powerful in that movie - exactly the same as I imagine him in A Father's Sins. Gerard Butler? 23. I think that it's quite funny that few have expressed a preference for who they think of when they read about Miss Elizabeth Bennet. If you read the comments above you will find that I imagine MYSELF as her when I read. Do I get involved in a book? Absolutely. I do realize that as the husband of a fledgling author who thinks about Mr. Darcy, dreams about Mr. Darcy, writes about Mr. Darcy, and talks about Mr. Darcy, you have solid reason for being disgruntled. Candy, please do NOT enter him in the giveaway as there needs to be recompense for his statement about our dear Elizabeth - and, for that matter, all women. Maybe it is because our lives have focused around the Regency era that he feels justified in making such a remark. He truly is a sweet man,a bit Bingley-ish on a normal day. Thank you for commenting.

John, I don't think it was Darcy's money or standing that appeals to most women, at least not to me anyway. For me it's his loyalty and integrity. He is always an honorable man. Sure he made some mistakes, but he learn from them. Now, Elizabeth didn't change, she just needed to understand Darcy better. ;)

  26. I love your visualizations for the Fitzwilliams! I would be at complete loss if I were to choose Lord Matlock between Sean Connery and Anthony Hopkins though:) Can't we have two strong characters in your next book where both Sean Connery and Anthony Hopkins could fit in, I wonder:)))
Although I am a hardcore fan of 1995 adaptation, with so many wonderful and talented actors and actresses, sometimes I think that I would like to see new Pride&Prejudice series (a movie would be too short to my liking).
Last year one of London theaters performed Pride and Prejudice on stage with David Oakes as Mr.Darcy. I did not have a pleasure to watch this performance, and although I like David Oakes, I have some doubts whether or not Mr.Darcy was a befitting role for him.
Also recently as I have become a fan of Tom Hiddlestone, I have started to wonder whether he would be good for Darcy (with his personality and golden locks he would be perfect for Mr.Bingley, if he were not a little bit old. But with his expressiveness, great talent in playing various controversial characters and his hair dyed black, he might be perfect for a new Darcy).
As for Lizzy, I still have some problems with accepting anyone else but Jenniffer Ehle:)
Thank you for sharing an excerpt. I like it when Darcy's relatives are likable, as it would mean less trouble for Lizzy.
And thank you for wonderful giveaway!

    1. You are most welcome. Thank you for your insightful comment. I, too, have recently began appreciating the talent of Tom Hiddleston. It had not occurred to me to think of him as Darcy. Certainly, his acting skill would not be questioned. His looks? Hair dye! It could work. I'll have to ponder that a bit. Who, then, would be your Lizzy in a remake? Certainly Jennifer is too old.

I will have to check out Mr. Oakes. This is the first time I have heard of him.

My next book, Mr. Bingley has two strong older male characters but one is NOT nice. Which would you have him be?

Thank you again for the comment and best wishes for the giveaway.

    2. If I were to look for a great actor to play an older not nice male character (particularly, clever intelligent powerful coldhearted) I would choose Charles Dance. I like Sean Connery to play nice guys, and as for Anthony Hopkins (although he is good at everything) I would also like to see him play someone positive:) If your not nice male character was not old, I would recommend already mentioned David Oakes, because he is good at playing charming half crazy baddies.
As for Lizzy, that would be more tricky:) Jenniffer Ehle in pair with Colin Firth has become iconic Lizzy for me, so I will hardly be objective if I were to look for new Elizabeth Bennet. But just now absolutely crazy idea visited me:) I think it could be fun to see Natalie Dormer try being Lizzy. Natalie has that playfulness, archness and impertinence that every Lizzy Bennet should possess, and Natalie will look good next to Tom Hiddlestone;) What would you say?
If you were a producer of new P&P series, whom you would like to play leading roles?

    3. Looks like you're watching Game of Thrones, oloore. Charles Dance would indeed make a good older, not-nice character. He does Tywin Lannister so well. Natalie Dormer's character in the aforementioned series (Margaery Tyrell) is sometimes playful, arch and impertinent but also rather sly and manipulative. I could see her more easily as Caroline Bingley. I didn't see her portrayal of Anne Boleyn in The Tudors, though.

Another couple of GoT alumni occurred to me as possibilities for Elizabeth before I saw oloore's post. Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) plays her role in a blonde wig but is naturally brunette and Rose Leslie (Ygritte) is redheaded but could go down the Jennifer Ehle route and wear a wig if we want our Lizzie to be dark haired. Both play strong willed characters in the series.

One possibility just sprang to mind for Mr. Bingley. How about Russell Tovey? He's good in everything he does and featured with Aiden Turner in Being Human. To me, he has a slightly gawky look about him that fits quite well with my idea of Bingley.

Joy, I like your idea! Loki as Darcy - there's an image to conjure with. Now you've got me going through the list of actors from the Marvel Universe in my mind, thinking who they could play in our new dramatisation of P & P. I'll have a think about that and maybe get back to you.

    4. Sorry, oloore and Joy, just realised it was oloore's idea about Tom Hiddleston playing Darcy. Must read previous posts properly in future!

    5. You are completely right about me watching Game of Thrones:) I think birds of a feather flock together:))) I have seen Natalie Dormer only in sly manipulative roles (well, only in two roles actually, Margaery and Anne Boleyn), but I would be interested to see her in something nice. Though I like your suggestions about Emilia Clarke and Rose Leslie. Well, I think we have got almost all important roles for new P&P adaptation (except for Wickham, but I don't care about who would play him), so only a little left to do - to find lots of money to produce this new adaptation and convince chosen actors/actresses to participate. Any ideas how we could do it?:)

    6. As it happens, we were just watching a couple of episodes of Season 3 of GoT last night. With the whole "recasting P & P" thing still fresh in my mind, I was half on the look out for someone to cast as Wickham. The only name I could come up with was Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) but at 45, (though he doesn't look it) he's probably a bit too old.

Joy, if you Google for images of him, you'll se what I mean. Possibly a candidate for the Colonel as well?

    7. As to funding, cast availabilty etc, the imagination is a wonderful thing, is it not? Some day, some one will decide it's time for a new dramatisation, probably when I'm even older and greyer than I already am. Then, when we watch it, we'll think " Gosh, Colin & Jennifer (or Matthew and Keira) were good, but these guys totally nailed it!" Just hope I'm still around to see it.

  27. Oloore and Anji, I thank you both for giving this such thought. You are right, some people seem to be nice people that need to be in nice rolls. However, that is not always true. Something to ponder so I thank you for your comments. I just LOVE this.

    1. Anji and Oloore, you two are a hoot! Thank you so very, very much for your comments. It is a wonderful way to close out this post. Only 16 hours left. Deep sigh! This has been delightful as we all get to know each other better. Your imaginations and visionary skill is highly impressive. When are your P&P variations coming out?

  29. A GREAT BIG THANKS to all who entered and commented. This has been so encouraging to me to continue writing about these characters. I am currently finishing chapter 10 of "Mr. Bingley: A Pride and Prejudice Variation" which tells the story of how Bingley and Jane finally reach their happily ever after - maybe! Then it's on to the good (or should I say "bad") Colonel Fitzwilliam who is traversing his own road to true love. Poor man! He just doesn't get women even though he thinks he has us all figured out. His road is not only rocky - it's filled with holes, canyons maybe. Oh well. Colonel Fitzwilliam seems to have to learn things the hard way. Bingley is not doing much better in his own journey. Men!!!

Thank you again, Candy, for your superb skills as hostess. Maybe some day we will meet face to face for a cup of tea and a long conversation about our love of Austen.

    Always, Joy Dawn King
