Sugar Spun Sister by Anna Garner ~ My Review

Sugar Spun Sister by Anna Garner

Book Blurb:
Life isn’t exactly sweet for Cricket Whittier. Her boss hates her, her work is soul-destroying, and the sexy guy she’s hooking up with doesn’t want to date her. But this girl is far from hopeless. When Cricket’s in the kitchen with her ice cream maker and a few choice ingredients, her troubles slip away as she becomes a delectable dessert-designing powerhouse. She loves it so much, she dreams of opening her own ice cream shop one day.

As it turns out, “one day” just might be closer than she thinks. Propelled by the help and encouragement of her best friends, Lindsay and Nora, Cricket starts making plans to set up shop. Which is easier said than done what with the internal squabbling, the sky-high costs, her parents forecasting failure and her increasingly complicated love life. Despite all these hurdles, will Cricket be able to make her sweet dreams come true?

Sugar Spun Sister by Anna Garner (who also writes under the name Libby Mercer) is a fun, quirky story with a New Agey feel to it.

Cricket Whittier is totally frustrated at work. Her boss doesn’t like her and is determined to make her life miserable. As her rage builds during the day, Cricket finds peace when she gets home by making ice cream, and she dreams of one day opening her own ice cream shop. Her friends, Nora and Lindsay, encourage her to follow her dreams and make someday into something much sooner...now. Nora scouts out store shops and finds the perfect space for Cricket to rent. As much as Cricket would love to make her dreams come true, she just doesn’t have the funds to open an ice cream shop. She soon finds out Nora, and Lindsay want in on the deal. Can three friends become partners and remain friends?

I enjoyed this story with its cast of colorful characters! Nora, one of Cricket’s best friends, is rich and bored with her life. There is trouble brewing in Nora's marriage, but she’s not talking about it. Cricket’s parents are a couple of old hippies who are “wary of society’s institutions.” They were against Cricket going into business for herself. (That was something I didn’t really understand. They didn’t want her to succeed.) Her brother Sage is there to help, along with his surfer friend Bax. Then there is Jimmy, Cricket’s ex-boyfriend who is now a "friends-with-benefits" friend. Let’s not forget her horrid boss, Oscar! Together, with a few others, make up an interesting group of people!

Sugar Spun Sister is a cute story. Although, I enjoyed reading it, it didn’t grab a hold of me. Other than finding the courage to follow her dreams there wasn’t much conflict. This is the first of a three book series called Sweet Dreams, and maybe this was just the set up for something bigger. I look forward to finding out!

W... W... W... Wednesdays ~ January 15, 2014

W... W... W... Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB of Should be Reading. To play along, just answer the following questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you'll read next?

What am I currently reading?
I am currently reading Sugar Spun Sister by Anna Garner. This is a cute story! I'm about half way through, and I'm enjoying it.

What did I recently finish reading?
I finished reading Twelfth Night at Longbourn by Maria Grace. This is the fourth book in the Given Good Principles series. The first three are a variation of Pride and Prejudice, and this one is Kitty's story. It's interesting to see who Kitty falls in love with! Review will be up soon.

What do I think I'll be reading next? Next on my list is Take a Chance On Me by Jennifer Dawson. I'm looking forward to reading this! I requested this one from NetGalley.

What are you reading? I'd love to heard from you!

Lying to Meet You by Anna Garner ~ My Review

Lying to Meet You by Anna Garner

Publication Date: September 5th, 2013
Received: e-copy from the author
Print Length: 328 pages
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Lying to Meet You is the debut book for Anna Garner, but as Libby Mercer she has written a few, such as Unmasking Maya (my personal favorite) and The Karmic Connection

Chloe’s friends think it's time for Chloe to find a boyfriend. They think she has been single far too long, but Chloe is too busy for a relationship. She has been busy building her fashion design career and opening her boutique. But it has been two years, and it would be nice to share her life with someone special. Now, that she is almost thirty, picking up guys isn’t as easy as it used to be. Chloe comes up with a theory that guys are attracted to girls who are already in a relationship. She runs her theory by her lifetime friend Ethan. He feels the same way about women, so they come up with a plan to have a fake relationship to see if they attract any would be lovers.

Chloe is asked to be a judge on a new reality TV show called American Dream. She quickly becomes smitten by another one of the judges, William Shannon. While Ethan has set his eyes on a co-worker named Lila. In the mean time, for appearance sake, Ethan and Chloe spend a lot of time together "dating" and fall into a cozy relationship.

I wasn't sure about Chloe's relationship with Ethan. I didn't know where it was going to go. I thought maybe they would fall in love while fake dating, but their was no obvious spark between them, just an easy comfortableness. They had been friends for so long. But, the sparks between William and Chloe were definitely flying, and Lila seemed to be interested in Ethan too! This experiment might just work ...or will it all come crashing down on them?

I like Chloe’s spunk! She’s not about to let another shoplifter get away with stealing from her store again! No, Chloe bolts out the door after the thief, chases her down and tackles her! Yay!

Lying to Meet You is a humorous (I found myself laughing out loud a few times!), sexy, fun story!

Book Description:

Does being in a relationship make you a hot commodity in the eyes of would-be suitors?

Chloe Lane is about to find out. When her childhood pal, Ethan Webster, asks her to play the part of his girlfriend in order to test this theory, she reluctantly agrees. As a work-crazed fashion designer, boutique owner and soon-to-be reality show judge, Chloe has no time for a real boyfriend, but being part of a faux pair will do just fine. Not that she has any intention of trying to attract someone else.

However…

Opportunity unexpectedly knocks when Chloe meets fellow reality judge, William Shannon. Super successful and super sexy, this high-powered entrepreneur inspires Chloe to test Ethan’s theory herself. Now, on top of keeping her fashion business productive, carving out a new role as a television personality, maintaining a fake relationship and attempting to lay the groundwork for a future relationship, she’s lying to William, lying to her friends, lying to her family and quite possibly lying to herself. Will Chloe be able to keep it all together, or are things about to explode?

About the Author:

Born and raised in the Midwest, Anna Garner's adventurous spirit kicked in after graduating from high school, and she's since lived in Boston, NYC and London. For several years, Anna worked in fashion--first as a journalist and then as a shopkeeper, and for a while she dabbled in design. Although chick lit was her first love, Anna started writing quirky romances, and her first one, Fashioning a Romance, was published in May 2012 under the name of Libby Mercer. This was followed by two more quirky romances: Unmasking Maya and The Karmic Connection. Since Lying to Meet You is written in old school chick lit style and isn't a clear cut love story, Anna decided to publish it under her real name. She currently lives in San Francisco and spends most of her time cranking out more stories.
