And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart. She’s going to need help. 

So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family.

My Review

I loved The Last Letter! Set in Telluride, Colorado, present day. Beckett has come to honor the request that his best friend, Ryan, made in his “last letter” (see book description).

First off, I loved the main characters, Ella and Beckett! Ella is fiercely independent and has already suffered a lot in her life. Beckett is extremely loyal. If he says he’s going to be there for you, nothing is going to stop him. I love strong, loyal men! He’s also very handsome, and an all-around good guy.

Second, I adored Ella’s kids, Maisie and Colt! The cutest kids ever. But sadly, Maisie has cancer, a rare form. She is incredibly brave through it all, and Colt is so good to his sister. They have that twin bond that can tell when something is wrong with the other.

Ella and Beckett are made for each other! Their romance is nicely paced, and trust is built.  I really like that they don't meet and jump into bed. But there are some mature scenes if you’re not into that.

Oh, and how can I forget to mention Havoc! Havoc is Beckett's military special ops dog.  She retired with Beckett because she wouldn't work with anyone else. They have a special bond. Havoc is a cool dog and is fantastic with Maisie and Colt.  

The Last Letter was definitely an emotional read. So grab your tissues because it has all the feels!

Chance brings about an early encounter between Charles Bingley and Elizabeth Bennet soon after his move into Netherfield. He soon begins to favour this pretty and lively young lady. Circumstances have kept Jane Bennet and Mr. Darcy from the neighbourhood, thereby changing the events that Jane Austen penned in "Pride and Prejudice."

When Mr. Darcy finally arrives, will he be able to keep from interfering when he meets this young lady his friend so greatly admires? When Jane returns from touring the Lake District with her aunt and uncle, will the young gentleman who returns with her prove to be better suited for her than Mr. Bingley ever was?  

In this "Pride and Prejudice" variation, chance and circumstance greatly affect the way several of Jane Austen's characters arrive at their happily ever after, but not necessarily the way you think. 

My Review

Once again Kara Louise has written another delightful Pride and Prejudice variation that I adore! 

What if… Jane was with the Gardener’s, touring the Lake District at the time when Bingley first comes to Netherland.  He meets Elizabeth first and thinks he’s in love with her? And what if, while Jane is gone she meets another man? 

Because of my own personal dislike of situations that find Elizabeth or Darcy attached or married to someone else, I had a tough time getting into this story. It’s just not right that it’s Bingley and Elizabeth admiring each other. No! No! No, it cannot be! Lol! But it didn’t take long for me to become hooked to the story, and then I couldn’t put it down!

I did love watching Darcy, who was also falling in love with Elizabeth, struggle with Bingley’s attachment to her. Darcy knows Bingley is not right for Elizabeth. She is much more suited for him! But Bingley has claimed her first, and as a gentleman and Bingley’s friend, Darcy can do nothing about it. Or can he? 

When Jane comes home to Longbourn, Bingley finds his true angel. But Mr. Marshal, the gentleman she met while touring with the Gardener’s, has also come to Longbourn. Is Jane already taken? And what of Elizabeth?

I also loved Mary’s story in this book. Because the older two Bennett girls seemed to have made good matches they were not available for Mr. Collins. Still, he overlooks Mary, who is perfect for him and she likes him! Fortunately, Elizabeth notices and gives Mary some much-needed help.

I loved Chance and Circumstance! After a few twists and misunderstandings, all was set to right, and our dear couples have their happily ever after.

About the Author

Kara Louise grew up in the San Fernando Valley, just north of Los Angeles. In 1991 she moved with her husband and son to Wichita, Kansas, where they lived for over 20 years. In September of 2013, they moved with their dog and 5 cats to the St. Louis area to be near their son and his wife. Four days after they moved there, they found out a baby was on the way and would soon be grandparents. They now have two very spoiled and very loved granddaughters, and a few other animals added (and subtracted) from the menagerie.

I was so excited to hear that Shock Loss, the fifth book in the Southern Fraud Series was coming out that I read it soon after receiving it! I loved it! I so enjoy spending time with Julia and Vincent, that I'm going to be totally bummed when the series is over. 

Now, this series is a continuing series, but at the same time, there is a solved mystery in each book. The continuing aspect is more of a personal nature than business, i.e. Vincent and Julia's growing romance that leaves us wanting more! And a cold case involving the rape of Julia's sister. So, I would suggest you read them in order.  But things change a bit in Shock Loss, and we are left hanging at the end.

Julia and Vincent are in trouble! Each of them is being framed for a crime they didn't commit. At the same time, someone is trying to kill them. Looking back at past cases, Julia and Vincent try to figure out who's out to get them. There are so many people who could be holding a grudge against them that they can't trust anyone - not even the police.

I love Julia's neighbor and best friend, Helena. I love the relationship they have - running over for coffee, having girl talk, but also, the fact that Helena is a US Attorney is a huge help for Julia, and she is one of only a handful of people that Julia can trust. 

It was fun to see some of the characters from past books in this one too! As Julia tries to figure out who may be seeking their revenge on them. 

As always, I love the chemistry between Julia and Vincent! I'm so happy that they take their romance a few steps closer in this one! 

I really enjoyed Shock Loss! I think it might be my favorite of the series so far! I can't wait for the next and final book of the series!

I loved Inspired by Grace by Jeanna Ellsworth! I found this sweet regency romance to be delightful! The story flowed nicely and kept me engaged!

As children, Gavin and Grace were the best of friends. They spent many of their summer days together, and when apart they would secretly exchange letters with the help of Gavin’s sister. But that all came to an abrupt end when the letters stopped, and Grace moved away. Both Grace and Gavin felt abandon by the other. 

Ten years have passed, and Grace is back in London for the season. It's the hope of her sisters (now that her parents are gone) that she find a good match. Walking down the street Grace and Gavin, now the Duke of Huntsman, literally collide with each other in front of Gavin’s London home. 

After finding out that Grace’s mother passed away three years earlier, Gavin’s mother offers to sponsor her, and the Duchess is determined to find Grace a husband. She also would like to find a wife for Gavin. 

I adored watching Gavin and Grace as they renew their friendship. They certainly have more than a few misunderstandings to work through.

I found it amusing that Gavin had read Persuasion by Jane Austen, and he encourages Grace to read it, hoping she would see something similar to their situation.

I truly enjoyed Inspired by Grace! It’s definitely one of my favorites by Jeanna Ellsworth. Well done!

Suddenly Mrs. Darcy is a delightful read! Jenetta James is a beautiful story teller! I loved the feel of the first person narrative told from Elizabeth’s POV; it reminded me of an old black and white movie! Quite charming!

After Mrs. Bennet accuses Darcy of compromising Elizabeth at the Netherfield Ball, Elizabeth and Darcy are forced to marry. Arrangements are quickly made, and Elizabeth soon finds herself on the way to Pemberley.

“And so it was that my marriage was a strange, hurried, and patched together affair that nobody seemed to enjoy.” ~ p. 20

Elizabeth vows to herself to make the best of her marriage with Mr. Darcy, to make it as good of a marriage as it could be. She soon grows more comfortable around him, but she doesn’t speak her mind as she did before they were married, and misunderstandings begin to simmer. Elizabeth is falling in love with him, but she is frustrated with his lack of conversation with her beyond the basics. She longs to be in his confidence, to be trusted with his thoughts. It seems Darcy has many secrets and Elizabeth finds out bits and pieces of them either by stumbling over them herself or by some mean-spirited person trying to hurt Lizzy. She keeps all this to herself until it becomes too much to bear and it comes exploding out.

My favorite stories are Pride and Prejudice variations; I love the chase! But I also love stories like this! Even though they are married soon at the beginning of the story, there is still a chase of sorts, as it is filled with insecurities and heartbreak, and finally happiness! 

I loved Suddenly Mrs. Darcy! I found it to be a beautiful story and one I’ll be rereading…I’ve already read it twice!

My Review:

I loved Alive by Scott Sigler! It is an exciting adventure that will keep you engaged, right to the end! 

A group of teenagers wake up with no memory, including who they are, where they are or how they got there. Their struggle to figure out what's going on and how to survive has a Maze Runner feel to it to me.  

I really enjoy survival stories like this. Em, the central character, is relatable. She is trying to do the best she can, but self-doubt, confusion, and anger get in the way sometimes. The other kids look up to her, which surprises her, but there are a couple of kids who would like to lead, which brings tension to the situation. 

I feel the book blurb is enough of a summary, and the author requests no spoilers so that new readers can get the same enjoyment from the twists and turns in the story as I did. So, I’m going to honor that. All I’m going to say is that I loved Alive. I felt like it ended well, meaning it didn’t leave me hanging. And I’m definitely going to read the next book, Alight, which is supposed to be out in early 2016.

A word of warning, there are some gruesome scenes and some cursing.

I would recommend Alive to any Sci-Fi/Dystopian fan!

For the last year or so, I’ve had a shift in my reading. I’ve found a new love in Dystopian/Post-apocalyptic stories. Combine that with my love of all things Austen, Steampunk Darcy is a perfect fit for me!  

Set in American Republic, post-repression. Not only was there an uprising against the government, the greed of men destroyed the environment. Now a slime rain falls, the rivers are polluted, and people are living on ship-cities or in cities that are cover by a bio-dome shield. 

William Darcy, an eighth generation Darcy, is working on a top secret project. If this technology were to fall into the wrong hands, it could be very dangerous. But Darcy wants to use it to rebuild Pemberley, which was destroyed during the Blitz. He wants to rebuild it to look as it did when Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy lived there in the early 1800s.  To complete this project he needs the help of scientist Seraphene Grant.

Unfortunately, Seraphene feels that Mr. Darcy is the last man in the world she would want to work for! Oh, she could use the money, alright. She is the sole provider for her mom and younger sister. She had two jobs, one doing scientific research at MIT, and she flew a hansom cab for extra cash. Even with both jobs sometimes there wasn’t enough to get by. 

I really enjoyed this story! Not being a retelling of Pride and Prejudice, there is no Elizabeth, but Seraphene has so many of Elizabeth's character traits that she was just like her! And Darcy was enough like his ancestor that they were naturally drawn together!

I loved the fun use of names in this story too! Darcy’s cat is called Mrs. Bennet. Darcy works (and owns) Longbourn Laboratories. Rich is Darcy’s half-brother, and he is nothing like Colonel Fitzwilliam. In fact, he causes much trouble for Darcy and Seraphene. There are a few other fun use of names, but I’ll leave them for you to discover!

I loved Steampunk Darcy! It puts a wonderful sci-fi/steampunk spin to Pride and Prejudice!

Green Card by Elizabeth Adams ~ My Review

I loved this story! Green Card is a fun romance that captured my attention so much so that I didn’t want to put it down! It's a low angst story. Yes, there are small disagreements, but not the gut wrenching moment that sometimes I can’t bear to go through before the happily-ever-after. Instead, it seems to come smoothly to the HEA and finishes up with an excellent epilogue!

William Harper is in a bit of a bind. He is working on a huge merger and due to a problem with his visa may have to leave the country, which could potentially kill the deal. He needs to find a way to stay in the country…fast! His lawyer and best friend, Andrew, comes up with the idea of William getting married to obtain a Green Card. Andrew just happens to be dating a girl whose sister would fit the bill perfectly!

Katherine Bishop is smart and witty and a struggling-to-make-ends-meet grad student. When presented with the plan that would alleviate her financial problems and allow her to focus on school, she is intrigued! And after meeting William she agrees to the plan.

To make this work, they agree to live together and tell no one that their marriage isn’t a real one, except those involved in the plan. I loved how up front Kate is, even considering that being in close quarters for a couple of years could lead to sex. She wants any complications that might arise from that to be included in the settlement. Smart girl, that Katy! 

I also saw many parallels to Pride and Prejudice here. Not with the storyline, but mainly in the characters. For example, Katherine is the second of four sisters, born into a dysfunctional family. She is best friends with her older sister, Jenny, who is happily dating William’s best friend, Andrew. William is wealthy, handsome and thinks he should marry someone from the right circles. His parents died when he was in his twenties, leaving him to run the family business and take care of his much younger sister, Jacqueline. The difference here is that William and Jacqueline are not as close as Darcy and Georgiana. There are more, and I won’t name everyone, but I had fun picking out the characters that I found similar to those in Pride and Prejudice! 

Another fun thing, Kate loves to cook, and she is cooking all the time for her and William. Which he comes to love! You know what they say…a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach! At the back of the book, Elizabeth Adams includes some of Kate’s favorite recipes. The day after I finished the book, I made some Oatmeal Spice Cookies! They were delicious!   

I would high recommend reading Green Card! Shortly after reading Green Card, I read Elizabeth Adams first book, The Houseguest: A Pride and Prejudice Vagary which I love too! I hope Ms. Adams has more books for me to read in the near future!

I loved Haunting Mr. Darcy! It’s a delightful retelling of Pride and Prejudice with a mashing of one of my favorite movies, Just Like Heaven with Reese Witherspoon.

The story begins on New Year's Eve in London, and Darcy has struggled since November, after leaving Netherfield, to rid Elizabeth from his thoughts. On the look out for a wife, Darcy makes a New Years wish to end his search and then at the end of the wish adds, “and to see Elizabeth one last time.” That same night the Bennet’s are at the New Year’s Eve Assembly in Meryton. Jane, still suffering from the effects of Bingley’s sudden removal from Netherfield, was not feeling well, she and Elizabeth left the assembly early. One the way home, blaming Darcy for Jane’s unhappiness, Elizabeth makes her own wish, “for Mr. Darcy to want something he cannot have!” Before reaching Longbourn, the carriage slides off the road and tips over. Elizabeth hits her head and slips into a coma.

The fun begins when Elizabeth’s spirit leaves her body and she finds herself unknowingly in Mr. Darcy’s library. She thinks she is having a lovely dream in a room filled with a great many amazing books! Darcy, who has fallen asleep in the next room, wakes to the sound of Lizzy’s voice and laughter. When they come face to face, they both think they are dreaming and have a very candid conversation. Only this is a dream either of them can shake. There seems to be an invisible barrier that surrounds Darcy, and Elizabeth is confined to that area. Everywhere that Darcy goes Elizabeth follows. Tethered together. 

I loved the humor in this story! There are so many funny moments when Darcy is having a conversation with someone, like Bingley, and Elizabeth is making comments that only Darcy can hear and he has to keep a straight face and make no comments back!  Another time, while sneaking about, Darcy has to hide to keep from being spotted and Elizabeth hides too, but of course, nobody can see her. Darcy reminds her of this, and she responds by saying, “I am aware of it, sir, but this is more fun, is it not?”

My only complaint about the story is how closely it followed Just Like Heaven's storyline. I knew how they were going to get out of their predicament. Still, I enjoyed the story because of the cultural and social differences of the time period, and, as a result, Elizabeth and Darcy had other obstacles to maneuver. 

Haunting Mr. Darcy is a humorous and sweet retelling of Pride and Prejudice! I would highly recommend reading it!

I loved this story! The Secret Betrothal is a wonderful retelling of Pride and Prejudice that takes us down a path different from the original. I love it when an author takes my two favorite characters and puts them in some new situations, just as Jan Hahn has done in this one.

What if, Elizabeth was so angry and hurt by Mr. Darcy’s  “tolerable” remark and haughty behavior that she goes against her better judgement and accepts a man under conditions that she usually wouldn’t do?  She lets her judgement of the man cloud her sensibilities, and she blindly accepts Mr. Wickham’s tales. And what if, knowing Mr. Darcy as well as he does, Mr. Wickham realizes there may be another way to seek his revenge...by taking away something that Mr. Darcy really wants. Elizabeth.  

There is so much I enjoyed about this story! We all know Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth will have their happily ever after, but the fun is getting there! I loved watching Elizabeth learn what an honorable man Mr. Darcy truly is, and what a rogue Mr. Wickham is. In the end, I found myself wondering if Mr. Wickham could actually regret his past behavior, and if Elizabeth really could have made him a better man. 

I found humor in Lady Catherine’s Spring tonic, which, unfortunately, caused everyone at Rosing and the Parsonage to become very sick, but allowed Elizabeth to see a kind and caring Darcy. And I cringed and chuckled, when Elizabeth had no one else to turn to, she turned to her mother for some advice about love! Haha! What was she thinking?! 

I enjoyed how the story passes quickly over parts of the story that are in the original, noting that they happen, but not going into detail. Focusing on scenes that are different. There is much less time repeating what we already know.

The Secret Betrothal is a fun read, and one that kept me up late into the night! I’ve enjoyed Jan Hahn’s other books An Arranged Marriage and The Journey and was happy that the same held true for this! I would recommend this one to anyone who loves Jane Austen Fan Fiction!
