Mr. Darcy's Clan Blog Tour ~ Character Interview, Excerpt, & Giveaway!

Hello, my friends! I hope you are all doing well and staying safe. Today, I’m delighted to be part of Mr. Darcy’s Clan Blog Tour! Lari Ann O’Dell is here with an exciting interview with George Darcy and his lovely wife, Lady Anne. Lari is also sharing an excerpt from her new book! Plus, don’t forget to enter the Rafflecopter for a chance to win an e-copy of the book! Details are at the bottom of the page!

I am so happy to be here at So Little Time... Just after I began writing my book, I had the opportunity and privilege of interviewing Mr. Darcy’s illustrious parents, Lady Anne Fitzwilliam and George Darcy. George Darcy apparently has a reputation of being unsociable and taciturn in the company of strangers, but his wife, Lady Anne, convinced him to participate, and he agreed only because she promised to join the interview. It is my pleasure to share it with everyone today.

LAO: Mr. Darcy, Lady Anne, it is an honor to be sitting here with you today. Readers of Pride and Prejudice have only heard about Darcy’s parents in passing. Thank you for agreeing to participate in this interview. I am sure the readers are eager to get to know more about the two of you. To begin, how did the two of you meet?

AD: Oh, it is a very amusing tale. I had just been presented to society, and I was overjoyed to be attending a masquerade at Pemberley. My parents assured me that I would catch the eyes of many young men. And they were correct, however, my attention was drawn by the heir to Pemberley, standing in the corner looking down his nose at everyone who dared to invade his home.

LAO: Is that true, Mr. Darcy?

GD: It is true indeed that I did not want to dance with any young lady. To do so would have raised expectations. You see, a Firstborn Son always knows when he has met his mate. I abhorred wasting my evening with vapid society women only hoping to marry me for my clan, land, and status as a Firstborn Son.

LAO: And did that change when you were introduced to Lady Anne?

GD: I saw this young lady approach me, practically glowing with joy. She curtsied and had the audacity to ask me to dance with her.

LAO: And what was your answer?

GD: I felt compelled to agree. Lady Anne called to me like a siren’s song. We shared our first dance, and I was foolish enough to ask for another set. It garnered the attention of all who were in attendance. My father and mother spoke to me that night and cheerfully offered their congratulations for finding a lady whom I actually admired.

LAO: That is simply lovely. Lady Anne, what compelled you to take such a scandalous action?

AD: I knew from the moment I saw George Darcy that I wanted him to be my Eternal Partner. And if he would not ask me, then what other choice did I have? The scandal was well worth the risk, for a month later, George obtained my father’s consent, and we became engaged.

LAO: Did you undertake the vampiric Rites shortly thereafter? I understand that the marriage ceremony for vampires is somewhat different.

AD: We married as soon as the Rites could be arranged. We were both eager to begin our lives together. Within the first year of our marriage, we were blessed with the news that I was with child.

LAO: That is quite a fanciful beginning. Of course, you want the same happiness in marriage for your own children. Do you think that is possible under the circumstances?

AD: It is my dearest wish that Fitzwilliam and Georgiana only marry for the deepest love. Unfortunately, my beloved husband does not seem to agree where Fitzwilliam is concerned.

LAO: Mr. Darcy, I have heard that you are in favor of the match between your son and your niece, Anne de Bourgh. Yet, as far as I understand it, only you and Lady Catherine de Bourgh support this, and the union is not desired by either of the concerning parties. Would you truly force your son to marry for connections when you have been blessed with connubial bliss in your own life?

GD: I had the good sense to fall in love with the daughter of an Earl. If Fitzwilliam is wise enough to make a match with an heiress, then perhaps I might bless the union. Otherwise, he must marry Anne de Bourgh. I have allowed Fitzwilliam to leave our home, but soon enough, he will have to return and assume his obligations to his family.

LAO: And do you truly expect your son to return home under such harsh conditions?

GD: I am his Sire and Father. I raised Fitzwilliam to follow his duty, not his heart. He will obey me.

AD: You must forgive my husband. Fitzwilliam has been gone nearly five years, and we have hardly heard any news about him. My husband jumps to the worst possible conclusions, but I have faith that my dear William is out there, finding his perfect match.

LAO: And would you give your blessing to any match your son would make?

AD: Pemberley is a rich estate. We do not need the dowry of an heiress to survive. As long as William is in love and loved in return, I shall have no complaints. I only want my son to be happy.

LAO: That is a lovely sentiment, Lady Anne. Mr. Darcy, do you too only want your son to be happy?

GD: Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance. He will be made content by serving his family and managing Pemberley. That is all I have to say on the matter. Now, I must ask you to leave. This interview is over.

LAO: As you wish. Our conversation has been enlightening, and I kindly thank you both for your time this afternoon.

In addition, I would like to share an excerpt from one of my favorite scenes featuring Lady Anne and George Darcy. Shortly after Darcy and Elizabeth make their way to Pemberley, we find George Darcy scheming in his study. Lady Anne tries to intervene on her son’s behalf but is unsuccessful. George Darcy’s actions in this scene have repercussions that could put an end to Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship forever.

George Darcy set aside the letter just received from Lady Catherine. Its contents only further confirmed his belief that his son’s marriage to Elizabeth Bennet would have disastrous consequences for the clan. He was more than amenable to the plan his sister-in-law proposed. He composed a response.

My dear Catherine,
I agree we must take action to prevent the match in question. I fear this will be more difficult than we first imagined. It appears he is deeply in love with the girl, and that her motives are, at least in part, inspired by actual affection. They are now engaged. In a fortnight I will send them to you at Rosings, along with Richard, James, Georgiana, and Amelia. Your plan is acceptable, and no doubt will be successful in crushing William’s love for Elizabeth.
Regards,
George Darcy

The door of his study opened. George sealed the letter with hot wax and did not bother to look up to see who had entered his domain. In a moment he felt his wife’s hand on his shoulder.

“Is this where you have been hiding all this time, my dearest?”

“I have no intention of humoring our son’s ridiculous match. I went to Miss Bennet last night in hopes of making her see reason, but she defied my wishes and accepted William’s foolish proposal.”

“Oh, George, if you had shared your intentions with me, I could have spared you the effort and told you it would not succeed.”

“And what, pray, do you mean by that?”

“William and Elizabeth are truly in love. Had you spent the rest of the evening with us, you would have seen it. She is a good person, and for the first time in his life, our son is truly happy. Why would you wish to stand in the way of that?”

“William must marry Anne. Our clan cannot lose Rosings. If our son had the good sense to fall for an equally dowered heiress, I could perhaps have accepted his choice; but Elizabeth Bennet is little more than a pauper. Her father may own his estate, but they have no connections, no wealth.”

Lady Anne frowned. “You are truly lost to me if you believe wealth and connections are all that matter in this world. Do you truly wish your son to spend an eternity married to someone he does not love, who will never love him in return—all for the sake of Catherine’s estate? Am I to understand that if not for the fact that my father was an earl and a Firstborn Son, you would not have chosen me as your Eternal Partner?”

“Our marriage was different, Anne. I was not already promised, however implicitly, to another. I gave Catherine my word Fitzwilliam would marry Anne. He is her only hope for a good match. Any other man would abuse her and bankrupt Rosings.”

“Your concern for your niece would give you credit, but I know you, George. This match has never been desired by anyone but yourself and Catherine, and so help me, if you try to force William to bend to your will, I will never forgive you.”

Many thanks to Lari for being here today! I enjoyed reading the interview with Darcy’s parents! It’s not often they are still alive in the story. It’s hard to imagine George Darcy not being happy for his son and siding with Lady Catherine! That in itself puts a different spin to the story!

Live, Love, Longbourn by Jennifer Becton ~ Guest Post & Giveaway!

Hello, my friends! I’m so excited to have Jennifer Becton visiting here today! I’ve read and enjoyed many of her books! Now, she has a new book out, and I’m thrilled about that! Live, Love, Longbourn is the first book in Becton’s A Bennet Sisters Series!

What Would Elizabeth Bennet Do?

Jane Austen is my literary idol. It’s amazing how the characters and plots she wrote in Pride and Prejudice have stood the test of time. Somehow they manage to adjust to contemporary life just as easily as they fit into their original Regency setting. That’s why there are so many fun retellings, continuations, and what-ifs.

Elizabeth Bennet is an inspirational character. She’s witty and wise without taking herself too seriously. But she’s also tough. She turns down Mr. Darcy’s ego-drive proposal and spars with Lady Catherine. She’s the type of strong woman that I’d like to be.

So when a difficult situation arises, I sometimes ask myself this question: what would Elizabeth Bennet do? After all, Jane Austen ought to be consulted on all matters of importance, like the best way to take coffee:

Sometimes, when I ponder what Elizabeth Bennet might do, my imagination runs wild. That’s how Live, Love, Longbourn came to be.

Recently, the barn where I board my horse (whose name is Darcy, btw) was threatened by a neighboring town. This particular town planned to incorporate into an official city and drew its boundaries to include my nearby community. The problem? The city planners had ulterior motives. They wanted to get their hands on the undeveloped farmland and forested land so they could profit from it. They didn’t care what the people of the rural community wanted. And the people of this small community didn’t want to be part of a city. So they fought to keep their land.

As I watched my barn owners battle to retain their way of life, I couldn’t help but note the similarities between their incorporation struggle and the financial straits the Bennet women faced in Pride and Prejudice. One day, Mr. Collins would inherit their family home. At that point, Mrs. Bennet and her daughters would lose their home and income. Though the details were not quite the same, the Bennets’ situation wasn’t so different from what I watched take place in my area. People in my community risked losing their family land and the ways they earned their living.

And that’s what got me wondering what Elizabeth Bennet would do if she found herself in this position….

Live, Love, Longbourn

The town-incorporation plot of Live, Love, Longbourn is loosely based on the events that took place in my nearby community. My plot is a highly fictionalized and exaggerated version of what happened. Any similarity between the characters in this book and real people is a total coincidence. (I sure hope there’s not a real Mr. Collins lurking out there somewhere!)

Elizabeth’s dream of refurbishing Longbourn Farm and opening it as a quaint mountain inn is on the cusp of coming true. But when the nearby city of Rosings threatens the future of her small farming town, Elizabeth must swallow her pride and ask for the help of Liam Darcy, the man who offended her and then disappeared years ago.

Successful sports marketing exec Liam Darcy returns to Meryton in the hopes of claiming his inheritance and escaping town quickly. But his plans change the moment he encounters Elizabeth Bennet, the only woman who might have tempted him to stay. When he discovers that his own aunt Catherine de Bourgh and her henchman Arthur Collins are threatening the future of Meryton, he decides he must not allow it.

Together, Elizabeth and Liam must fight the overreaching grasp of the city of Rosings before it destroys not only the town of Meryton but the future of Elizabeth and all the Bennet sisters.

Live, Love, Longbourn is the first book in the Bennet Sisters Series, a modern retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice in three parts. Each book focuses on one of the Bennet sisters who played a prominent role in Pride and Prejudice: Elizabeth, Jane, and Lydia. Set in the quaint mountain town of Meryton, Georgia, this series is like Jane Austen meets the Hallmark Channel.

So if you love small town romance, modern Jane Austen retellings, and Hallmark movies, check out Live, Love, Longbourn.

About the Author

Jennifer Becton worked for more than twelve years in the traditional publishing industry as a freelance writer, editor, and proofreader. In 2010, she created Whiteley Press, LLC, an independent publishing house. She is a die-hard Jane Austen fan. While she loves Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, she has a not-so-secret fondness for Austen’s minor characters like Charlotte Lucas and Caroline Bingley. She always wondered what happened to those characters next. So she wrote her own version of their stories. She also writes mysteries under the name J. W. Becton.

What Are You Reading? ~ Mar. 18th, 2020

f* * Post contains affiliate links. * *

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finish reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Hello, my friends! Wow! Crazy times right now! I hope you are all well and safe!
Current Read

I'm currently reading Educated* by Tara Westover. I'm fascinated by Tara's experiences growing up with her survivalist family. It's very interesting, but being non-fiction, it's a slower read for me.

Recently Finished

I finished reading Aftermath* by Kelley Armstrong. It was pretty good! It was more of a mystery than I thought (didn't read the blurb all the way - the first paragraph grabbed me, and I went with it!). I enjoyed it! ~ 4 stars.

What's next?

Depends on how I feel. I just got Live, Love, Longbourn (The Bennet Sisters, Bk 1)* by Jennifer Becton. It looks really cute! I might read that. :)

So, tell me, what are you reading? I hope you all are well!

"When Duty Calls" by Belén Paccagnella Blog Tour! ~ Guest Post, Excerpt, & Giveaway!

Hello, my friends! I'm so happy to have Belén Paccagnella back again for a visit! I'm excited about her new book When Duty Calls because I love it when Darcy and Elizabeth are forced to be together!

Thank you, Candy, for receiving me once again here at So Little Time... It’s always a pleasure to be part of your blog and share this experience with your readers.

As I said in my first blog tour, my love for all things Austen began in the early 2000s, after watching the 1995 BBC miniseries. Of course, the next thing I did was to buy the novel, and after reading it in Spanish (not very fond of that translation, I must confess), I searched the local libraries for an English version that wasn’t toned down for scholars. Reading the book wasn’t easy for me, believe me, I had to check a dictionary at least twice every paragraph to understand the words and catch Miss Austen’s meaning. Then, thanks to my sister, who told me of a fanfic site she found (I never imagined these things existed), a whole new world opened up for me. When I devoured all the stories there, I started searching for more sites that would satisfy my craving for more Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.

Like many other readers, I find those stories in which Darcy and Elizabeth are brought together against their will extremely appealing. Whether it is an accident that threw them together into a cave or some tragedy at Longbourn that forces Elizabeth to reconsider and grudgingly accept Darcy’s proposal, I am a goner when it comes to our dear couple dealing with their issues face to face and not separately as it happens in the original novel. So, one Sunday afternoon, bored to death with a TV show, I imagined this little scene at Pemberley, in which the Darcys have been married for a couple of months, but the union has not been consummated yet. In this scene, I selected for your blog my first ever attempt at writing: our dear couple is already in love, having already transited that glorious phase in which most misunderstandings had been cleared. However, they have yet to talk about them and are unsure of how to approach each other for fear of being rejected.  Thus, this ‘forced marriage’ story was born. From then on, I couldn’t stop. The feedback I received from the readers was positive —despite my idiomatic limitations at the time— and encouraged me to write more. I still wanted to stay true to canon, but I knew certain scenes were not going to happen if I didn’t follow the original storyline. So, I adapted them to fit the new plot. How could I keep out the magnificent argument between Lady Catherine and Elizabeth if the wedding already happened? How can Elizabeth refuse Darcy’s proposal if she’s already married to him? Well, you’ll have to read it to find out!

Forced marriage stories had been written over and over again during the past two decades. I hope When Duty Calls still manages to surprise the readers.

The Picnic

The picnic Mr. Darcy had suggested the night before took place by the trout stream situated beyond the grove, a short distance from the house. The Gardiner children were excited about spending a day in the park, as were the gentlemen—Mr. Gardiner in particular, given his fondness for fishing. The gentlemen, together with Miss Darcy and the children, lead the way soon after breakfast while Elizabeth and Mrs. Gardiner joined them some time later, followed by a line of servants carrying baskets filled with food and drink. As they approached the site, Elizabeth and her aunt were met with excited laughter from those already gathered.

“They must be enjoying themselves very much from what we can hear,” Mrs. Gardiner told her niece as they made their way down the slope.

“Indeed! They seem to be greatly entertained!” Elizabeth replied with enthusiasm.

“I dare not imagine what they are doing to make such—”

Mrs. Gardiner’s speech was interrupted by the sound of a great splash, a clear indication that someone had fallen into the water. Screams of alarm were soon followed by giggles from the children as well as Mr. Gardiner’s resounding laughter. With expressions ranging from concern to amusement, the ladies picked up their skirts and hurried to the stream to see what commotion had inspired such merriment. They arrived in time to see a completely drenched Mr. Darcy emerging from the water.

“Dear Lord!” cried Mrs. Gardiner, almost losing her countenance. Next to her, a line of startled servants observed the scene with wide eyes.

Mr. Gardiner extended his hand to assist Mr. Darcy from the water. Even the timid Georgiana was laughing at the sight of her dignified brother in such an unbefitting state. Too stunned to move, Elizabeth observed her grinning husband as he stepped onto firm ground and shook the water from his hair. It was a most unusual sight, and it took her a moment to overcome her surprise.

“Good heavens! What happened?” she enquired after finding her voice.

“I was trying to fetch something for Matthew, and I fell into the water,” replied Mr. Darcy to his amused audience.

Elizabeth could not entertain the idea of Mr. Darcy falling into a pond simply because of a five-year-old child. Regaining her famous wit, she countered, “And what is this ‘something’ you were trying to fetch that led to your unexpected union with the water?”

“Perhaps it is better that I show you,” Mr. Darcy said as he walked towards his wife with one hand behind his back and a devilish smile on his face. Behind him, Matthew covered his giggles with both hands.

Elizabeth contrived to formulate a response with all the self-assurance she could muster, which was little, given the absurdity of their current situation. But the gentleman was already standing before her, water dripping from his hair and clothes, his eyes shining with mischief.

“This,” he declared as he presented her with a frog not two inches from her nose.

Elizabeth screamed at the sight of the fat, greenish, and decidedly horrible creature and jumped back in horror. The rest of the party erupted into laughter. Even the servants tried to hide their mirth, but their bemused smiles betrayed them.

“Mr. Darcy! How could you!” she cried, placing her hand on her beating heart. “You—”

Elizabeth’s efforts to chastise her husband were cut short when Mr. Darcy took hold of her chin with his free hand. Her eyes opened wide when he gently pressed his fingers into her cheeks forcing a pout to her lips. There he planted a firm, noisy kiss, much to Elizabeth’s—and everyone’s—surprise.

With his gaze fixed on hers, Mr. Darcy eased his hold on her chin, his smug smile never wavering, challenging her to say something else. Elizabeth looked at him in astonished silence, still trying to overcome the shock of being kissed by her husband so unexpectedly and in front of such a large audience.

“Now, if you will excuse me, madam”—Mr. Darcy’s bow was all politeness—“I shall make myself presentable for lunch.”

He then handed the frog to Matthew and marched towards the house. Elizabeth stood perplexed while the rest of the party observed her with amused grins on their faces.

“That, my dear,” said Mr. Gardiner to his wife, highly diverted by the whole occurrence, “is a jolly good way to silence a woman.”

The picnic progressed as planned once Mr. Darcy returned in dry clothes. Everyone enjoyed the day thoroughly, although, for Elizabeth, perhaps not as much since the kiss her husband bestowed earlier in the day had driven her into a state of troubled muteness. Her attitude should not be mistaken as displeasure for Mr. Darcy’s advances, however. On the contrary, she was more than happy he had taken such an enormous and completely unexpected liberty. However, she could not help but fret about what may come afterwards. Was it proof that past grudges had been overcome and they were now on the path towards a loving marriage? Would Mr. Darcy come to her bedroom and finally consummate their union?

The mere thought of having Mr. Darcy in her bed made Elizabeth bashful and fidgety. She sat in agitated silence, meditating on what the future might bring, her heart aflutter and her mind wild with images and sensations that she had not felt since her engagement when she was given a brief but ardent sample of intimacy between a husband and wife.

No matter how unsettling these thoughts were, after so many weeks of admiring Mr. Darcy from afar, Elizabeth felt her efforts were finally rewarded. She had kissed him; he had returned her affections. Their intentions and expectations, albeit not voiced directly, had been tacitly expressed and acknowledged by each other. To settle matters between them, the only thing left was to admit their true and deepest feelings.

When Duty Calls
by Belén Paccagnella

Book Description:

The Netherfield ball brings about many changes for the population of Meryton, and more so for the female residents of Longbourn. Mr. Bingley’s departure leaves the eldest, Jane Bennet, heartbroken whilst Mr. Collins’s proposal induces Miss Elizabeth to make a hasty escape. During her flight, she happens upon Mr. Darcy, a gentleman she despises. A moment of solitude in the woods leads to rather improper behavior, and the couple departs with the promise they will tell no one about their minor indiscretion. When their secret is finally uncovered, marriage becomes the only solution to saving Elizabeth from social disgrace. Her other grudges against Mr. Darcy are amplified by resentment and the prospect of spending her life with a man she can never respect. Nonetheless, the marriage takes place, forcing the young couple to deal with their pride and prejudices as husband and wife.

Originally posted online almost twenty years ago, this Regency tale of redemption narrates the struggles of two people, their differences, and their rocky start. But will they succeed in overcoming lies, misunderstandings, and their own errors to finally find love?
