Heartbroken: A Pride and Prejudice by Laura Moretti ~ Spotlight

Hello, my friends! Today, I’m spotlighting Laura Moretti’s new book, Heartbroken! The cover looks fantastic! I love the photo of the couple.

Heartbroken
A Pride and Prejudice Variation
by Laura Moretti

Publication Date: February 21, 2024 Available for pre-order!

Blurb:

Elizabeth hasn’t heard from Darcy since violently rejecting his declaration of love. But then one day… She’s bored. Yes, bored. No, there’s no better reason for it.

Anyway, she texts him. And Darcy texts back.

For Elizabeth, it’s nothing, sending this first message. It’s a game — an absurd decision that she just makes on the spur of the moment. For Darcy, this is life and death. This is his second chance, to maybe get Elizabeth to look at him, really look at him at last.

So. A party, where Jane and Bingley are annoyingly happy. A business meeting at Pemberley. Short dates in a café, in winter, while it’s snowing outside. Valentine’s Day in February, in the rain.

The game is getting serious. Elizabeth is getting attached. And Darcy will do anything, anything, not to lose her again…

From despair to hope, a passionate, intense love story…

All The Wrong Notes by Riana Everly ~ Guest Post, Excerpt, & Giveaway!

(Post contains affiliate links)

Hello, my friends! I’m so excited to have Riana Everly here today! She’s written a new series, and the first book, All the Wrong Notes: A Modern Pride and Prejudice Improvisation, is already out.

Please read an excerpt from All the Wrong Notes below! Plus, she’s giving away an eBook from the series to one of my lucky readers! Details are at the bottom of this page.

Origin of a Series

Thank you so much, Candy, for hosting me here today. I’m honoured and delighted to be able to spend a bit of time here on your blog.

As some of you might know, I’ve just released the first of three books in a new series of contemporary Austen-inspired novels. This series is called Austen Echoes, and I’ll explain the name.

First of all, it will be no surprise that the stories all echo the wonderful originals that Jane Austen left us. These are not scene-by-scene retellings, cast in modern clothing, but rather, they’re stories that are strongly influenced by Austen’s work. Anyone who knows Austen will have no problem recognising the story arcs or the characters, but I’ve let the narrative take me where I feel the story needs to go, even if that doesn’t line up 100% with the original.

When I sent the first draft to my editor, one of her first replies was, “I literally gasped out loud when I worked out who Wickham was!” That brought a huge grin to my face.

The second reason for the series name is a reference to a unifying aspect. The three books in Austen Echoes all revolve around members of the same choir, who know each other and who interact between stories, and this choir is called The Eglinton Echoes.

Since the stories echo Austen, and the characters are part of the Echoes, the series title just came to me. Welcome to Austen Echoes!

But where did the idea come from?

Last year, I published Preludes, a contemporary musical retelling of Persuasion, my favourite of Austen’s novels. I loved seeing how Austen’s characters translated into the modern world, and as a musician myself, I loved writing about music. Then I began to talk to Romance Café Publishing, who specialise in contemporary romance, and an idea quickly began to form. I wasn’t ready to leave my modern musical world, and a series of shorter novels would let me spend more time in the city I love, and in the musical world that I love, while getting to know modern versions of the characters we love so much.

I presented them with a general idea, and they were as excited about it as I was. The three books that make up this series all but wrote themselves, and I just thrilled with the response from the editorial team.

At the same time as I was writing about a choir, my son began to think about auditioning for the local concert choir. He sang in a couple of choirs while he was away at university, including in the Ottawa Choral Society. The musical director from that ensemble has since moved to Toronto to take up the baton at The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, and since my son knows him and enjoyed working with him, he was encouraged to try out. Through his connections, I was even able to sit in on a rehearsal, just to make sure that I had the details right.

Everything just seemed to snap into place.

So, what about the books themselves? Well, you’ll have to read them to find out!

The first one, which was released just last week, is my reimagining of Pride and Prejudice. Elise (my Lizzy) and Will (my Darcy) have a terrible first meeting, and do not get off to a good start. You might say they hit all the wrong notes!

Here’s an excerpt from my new book, All the Wrong Notes: A Modern Pride and Prejudice Improvisation. Elise and Janet have just been at a speed-dating event. It went wonderfully for Janet. It was less wonderful for Elise. (By the way, you can read about Janet and Carlos in my free short story, The Perfect Love Song.)

***

“There wasn’t anyone you liked?” Janet tutted as the two women headed to the doors. “I thought some of them were very nice.”

“You seemed to like that Spanish fellow, Number Twelve. From what I saw, he could hardly bear to move from your station after the bell rang.”

Janet’s eyes went dreamy for a moment. “Carlos. His name is Carlos. I know we weren’t supposed to give our names, but… he’s lovely, isn’t he?”

Elise had enjoyed her eight minutes with him. “He was definitely charming.”

“And so handsome.” If Janet were a little bit dreamier about him, she would dissolve in a pastel-coloured mist of rose petals and singing birds.

“Handsome, indeed. As every man should be, if he can at all help it!”

Janet rolled her eyes. “You are impossible, Elise! I really liked him. He enjoys reading and cooking, and he’s a music lover, too. He sings, if you can believe that! We only had a few minutes, but I really liked him. I hope we match.” She let out a happy sigh, full of more rose petals and fairy dust. “Come home with me. We’ll order pizza, and I’ll go on and on about Carlos, and then I’ll drive you home.”

Elise stifled a snicker and glanced at her watch. It was 8:30, and she was hungry. They had taken a short break in the middle of all that speed-dating for a snack, but a handful of pretzels and a ginger ale didn’t fill the belly. It might help keep her mind off that miserable Number Seven who couldn’t even be bothered to try.

“Thanks. Maybe we can order now, so it will be ready by the time we get to your place. The usual?”

“Absolutely,” Janet replied. She ran a hand through her hair and gasped. “Oh! I’ve lost an earring. These are a favourite pair, too.” She shook her head, and only one golden spiral danced from an earlobe. “Do you mind? I’ll run back into the room and see if I can find it.”

She dashed back into the meeting room without waiting for a reply. Elise moved to the wall by a large plant, to stay out of everyone’s way while she waited.

“You were awful in there.”

A man’s voice sounded from a few feet away. The plant hid him from view, but by the slight accent, it was Carlos, the charming guy Janet had gushed over. He did not sound pleased.

“Why did you bother coming at all, if you weren’t even going to be pleasant?”

A sharp exhalation of breath, almost a snort. Then another man spoke. “I said I would attend. I never promised to find pleasure in it.”

That was Mr. Snootypants, Number Seven. A pause.

“There was nobody attractive or interesting enough to waste my time on. What sort of desperate person comes to these things anyway?”

“I came,” Carlos grunted. “And so did you. I thought some of the women were charming. Did you see the redhead? She’s stunning.”

Another snort. “That can’t be denied. But she was the only woman in the room worth looking at, and she seemed only to have eyes for you. Anyway, she smiled too much. She giggles.”

“She is lovely, isn’t she? And sweet, and smart, and so funny! But what about some of the others? There was the brunette with the yellow shirt…”

Elise blinked. That was her! It was flattering to be considered almost in the same zone as Janet.

“I was there to keep my promise to you. I don’t need to waste my time on people who can’t even be bothered to dress for the occasion. Here’s the car. Let’s go.”

Not so flattering. Jerk.

Warm air rushed in as the two men opened the door and left the lobby, leaving Elise with the sight of their departing backs and a rather bad taste in her mouth.

Janet might fancy Carlos, she huffed to herself, but hopefully she would never have to set eyes on Number Seven Snootypants again in her life.

All The Wrong Notes
A Modern Pride and Prejudice Improvisation
By Riana Everly

Blurb:

Elise Benzion has everything she wants. The arts centre that she’s built from the ground up is thriving. She has a circle of great friends. Her concert choir, the Eglinton Echoes, is in top form and gives her an artistic outlet to satisfy her musical side. What she does not want is an annoying, rude, and far too handsome man hovering around. But Will is her best friend’s new beau’s good friend, and she’ll play nice, for Janet’s sake.

Eventually she begins to discover the man beneath the unpleasant veneer, and tolerance warms into a tentative friendship, and possibly something more.

Then disaster strikes, and everything she loves, everything she’s worked so hard for, crumbles in an instant. With all her dreams dashed and her beloved arts centre destroyed, her biggest regret might just be losing Will.

Is there any hope? Or will a demon from his own past keep them apart forever?

This musical reimagining of Jane Austen’s beloved Pride and Prejudice will have you cheering the characters on, pulling you into their world and into their hearts.

Came a Flight Gently by Leigh Dreyer ~ Excerpt

Hello, my friends! Leigh Dreyer's third book of the Pride in Flight Series is now available, and I have an excerpt from Came a Flight Gently for you to read! I hope you enjoy it!

Came a Flight Gently
by Leigh Dreyer

In the exciting conclusion of the Pride in Flight Series (The Best Laid Flight Plans and The Flight Path Less Traveled), our dear couple Elizabeth and Darcy have moved to Pemberley to begin their lives together. An outsider to New York society and the affluent world of Darcy, our heroine uses her characteristic drive and wit to begin her marriage and all that comes with him. Helped along by Mrs. Reynolds and a curmudgeonly airplane mechanic, Elizabeth discovers a new path to the civilian flight world. Darcy, ever the hero, supports her and learns to trust her instincts. Fast-paced and dramatic, Came a Flight Gently soars through love, adventure, and intrigue as it races through Reno to the finish.

Excerpt from Chapter Fifteen

Elizabeth was back a few days later to meet Weston’s friend as arranged.
“Mrs. Reynolds sent you a sausage biscuit, hard-boiled eggs, and water,” Elizabeth announced walking into the hangar office and pulling the water bottle out with a flourish.
“Water.” Weston made a face of disgust.
“She said you’ve got to watch your sugar.” Elizabeth laughed. “I think you two should go out,” Elizabeth added, watching Weston attack the breakfast bag.
“No, we’re just old friends.” He sighed, taking a bite and waving one hand.
An aircraft taxiing up outside the hangar interrupted them. Weston got up and opened the hangar door. “That would be your instructor.”
Elizabeth followed him out of the office.
As the door opened, the engine ticking of a beautiful red, white, and blue Lancair Legacy came to a stop. The canopy tipped forward and a thin, attractive woman in her early thirties stood up smiling and waved. She was wearing something like tennis shoes but different, khaki slacks and a blue woman’s polo shirt with wings on the left side.
The woman hopped down off the wing as Weston and Elizabeth waited. “How are you, you old curmudgeon?” she said, giving Weston a big hug.
He put her arms around her. Elizabeth noticed him blush.
“Check the oil and wipe her down,” the woman joked as she let him go. Weston backed away, looking down and coughing to recover his voice.
“Mrs. Darcy, may I present Allison Noreen Dashwood, airline first officer, and Lancair instructor extraordinaire. Allie Nore, Mrs. Darcy.”
“Elizabeth, please,” said Elizabeth, putting out her hand.
“Allie,” she answered, shaking her hand, and looking annoyed at Weston. “And when have you become so formal, Stephen Paul? Not Fog anymore? Should we just call you ‘Step?’” She laughed.
Weston blushed an even brighter red.
“You have a beautiful airplane,” Elizabeth said.
“So do you,” replied Allie, nodding to the aircraft in the hangar. “I’m the one that flew it in. You didn’t screw with the flight control balance, did you, Steve?”
“No, no, just checked out the engine, did a flight condition check, and changed the oil,” he replied.
“Good,” Allie answered, looking at Elizabeth. “It’s a sweet flying aircraft. Whoever built the kit did an outstanding job harmonizing the controls. Nice avionics too.”
     They went into the hangar.
“Weston said you’re an airline pilot,” Elizabeth asked.
“Yep, for about five years. Should upgrade to captain soon. Seniority, you know? Flew checks and freight before that, some charter work, and instructed at a Cessna 141 school. And you?”
“Got my commercial couple weeks ago, Air Force T-6, and the mighty Skyhawk,” Elizabeth answered.
“Steve said you, how’d he put it, ‘crashed’ out of training.”
“Yeah, ejected and trashed my back. Medically retired.”
“Hmm,” said Allie, then perking up, “well, that won’t stop us today.”
Allie continued to talk, and Elizabeth listened. She discovered that she liked this calm woman who seemed to understand airplanes. They discussed various flights, procedures, and Allie shared how she started with the airlines. Soon, conversation shifted to the upcoming flight, and Elizabeth could tell Allie was probing her knowledge and desire to fly the Lancair.
After Allie appeared satisfied, she said, “Let’s go sit in the plane, go over systems and avionics. It’ll take about an hour. Steve keeps talking about a Mrs. Reynolds and a mansion for lunch, then we’ll take her up this afternoon.”
“Sounds good,” responded Elizabeth. “I’ll call Mrs. Reynolds to expect three of us.”
At the aircraft, Allie showed Elizabeth what to look for in the pre-flight inspection, how the landing gear retracted, and how to check the oil and propeller. Elizabeth enjoyed the way she instructed and treated her as an equal. Allie had a quiet demeanor but shared her knowledge freely, allowing Elizabeth to learn quickly. Allie continued to quiz Elizabeth, but it was pleasant, unlike standup evaluations during Air Force pilot training which had left her sweaty and nervous.
With the walk-around completed, they entered the cockpit. “The biggest difference from something you’ve flown before is the stick is in your left hand, and the throttle, the right,” began Allie. “It’s different than the yolk, but you’ll get used to it. Most people initially over control in pitch so watch yourself on takeoff.”
Elizabeth moved the stick around, getting the feel and checking the flight controls. Together, they went through the instruments. Weston had hooked up an auxiliary power cart so they could view the avionics without draining the battery. Allie made Elizabeth operate and input data into the avionics.
“Each system is just a bit different,” said Allie. “Makes it a pain switching between aircraft.”
Elizabeth nodded, concentrating on pushing the buttons.           “Yeah, this is similar, but different from the Bonanza. I’ll have to practice before taking this in the weather.” She finished putting in a typical flight plan and sat back.
“There. That’s a good place to stop. After lunch, we’ll get airborne. Typical stuff, stalls, slow flight. You know the drill. You said you just finished your commercial ticket…”
Elizabeth nodded.
“Great,” Allie said, rolling her eyes, “you’ll probably be better than me at those maneuvers.”
“Oh, I doubt it,” said Elizabeth. “You’ve got the more recent Lancair practice.” They both laughed as they got out of the aircraft.
Weston came out of the office and turned off the power unit.
“Ready for lunch? Mrs. Reynolds just called and said whenever you all are ready.”
“Sure, let’s go see this mansion.” Allie teased.
Weston and Elizabeth grinned at each other.
“I’ll drive,” said Weston. “Get in the truck.”
During the short drive, Allie said, “Steve’s been telling me about this extravagant mansion forever. Which one is it? I saw four within five miles of the airport flying in.” She narrowed her eyes suspiciously at Weston. “Based on all the other jokes he’s pulled, it’s probably a mobile home at the other end of the airport.”
Elizabeth tried not to chuckle; Weston kept a straight face. They turned into the driveway and Pemberley came into view. Elizabeth remembered the first time she had seen Pemberley and how her stomach had dropped in amazement at the utter beauty of the home and the surrounding land.
“Here we are,” said Weston, grinning.
Allie looked forward and her mouth dropped. “You gotta be kidding me,” she said.
“No, this is it. Just a small summer cottage.” A big smile erupted on Elizabeth’s face. “Welcome to Pemberley. Steve, drive to the front door.”
Weston said, “The front door, ooh, the front door. We must be getting the full treatment, Allie.”
They parked and walked to the door.
“Oh my god. You live here? How do you not get lost?” said Allie.
“I have,” said Elizabeth, laughing. “I had to carry the tour map with me for the first few weeks.”
Mrs. Reynolds met them at the door, and they made introductions walking to the breakfast room.
“You have a breakfast room and a dining room?” said Allie as they walked by.
“Yep, and a parlor, and a music room, and a study.” Elizabeth smiled. “Oh, and a bar, slash, game room.”
“Wow—now, I guess I’ve got something to work toward,” replied Allie.
Mrs. Reynolds brought out two platters with Reuben sandwiches, chips and pickles for the women and a Rueben sandwich only for Weston.
“Allie, what can we get you to drink?” asked Elizabeth.
“Root beer, if you have it, please,” responded Allie.
Elizabeth chuckled. “Virgil’s, Dad’s, Barq’s, A&W? Here, you pick your poison,” asked Elizabeth.
     “I’ll take a Dad’s,” said Weston.
“You’ll have water,” snapped Mrs. Reynolds, glaring at Weston.
The two younger women giggled as a very maternal Mrs. Reynolds put a glass of ice water in front of him before sitting down next to him.
In between bites, Allie asked, “So Elizabeth, what do you miss about Air Force flying?”
“Well, I didn’t get very far. Instruments are about the same. I miss formation flying,” answered Elizabeth.
Allie said, “I’m a FAST instructor, and the Lancair is a good formation plane.”
     “What’s FAST?” asked Elizabeth, intrigued.
“It’s a group that certifies people to fly formation together. Airshows require it, and various aircraft groups signed up to agree on signals and expectations. You have to practice with an instructor, take a test, and a checkride,” explained Allie. “But most of all, it’s fun! Not every day you get to fly formation, huh?”
“That sounds cool,” said Elizabeth. It wouldn’t be hard to talk Darcy into a few weekends away to fly. He could even come with me!
“Get through your checkout before you go off flying too close to someone else,” grumbled Weston.
“Steve, what do you have against anyone having fun?” teased Allie.
“Yes, what do you have against fun?” asked Mrs. Reynolds, turning on him.
Elizabeth opened her mouth to add on, but Weston interrupted, “I know when I’m out numbered. Should have never agreed to lunch with three women. Like a zebra in a crocodile farm. Let’s go. Eat up. Some of us have to work for a living.”

About the Authors

Leigh Dreyer is a huge fan of Jane Austen variations and the JAFF community. She is blessed to have multi-generational military connections through herself and her husband, who she met in pilot training. She often describes her formative years in this way: “You know the ‘Great Balls of Fire’ scene in Top Gun (Goose, you big stud!) when Goose and Meg Ryan have their kid on the piano? I was that kid.” Leigh lives with her pilot husband, a plane-obsessed son, a daughter who was a pink pilot for Halloween, and a one-year-old son who is so used to F-16 noise, he does not even startle to sonic booms.

Paul Trockner was an Air Force fighter pilot for twenty-eight years. He flew the F-111, T-37, A-10, and T-38. He currently teaches fighter pilots using simulator instruction. He has been happily married for thirty-six years to his lovely wife Elizabeth. Leigh is the oldest of his five children.

Sanctuary Vol. 2
by Cat Andrews

If someone had told him six weeks ago that he would end up here with this incredible woman in his arms, he would have scoffed in disbelief. Yet here he was, falling in love with her, holding her while she slept, and embracing emotions he never imagined he would feel again.

Will Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet have unexpectedly found each other—and a slice of happiness—on a tiny island off the coast of Maine.

With wonderful friends surrounding them and a passionate new love in full bloom, life is moving forward; they’re planning a future together as a family of three with Will’s son Jack, and the lazy days of summer are looking exceedingly bright.

But while some relationships are slowly and painstakingly being rebuilt, a long-kept secret, finally revealed, threatens to tear others apart.

Sanctuary is a contemporary romance inspired by Jane Austen's  Pride and Prejudice and does contain adult content.

Introduction to the excerpt:

Volume 1 of Sanctuary mostly focuses on the growing relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Will Darcy. And while they and their romance are still the stars of Volume 2—along with Will’s son Jack—much of Volume 2 also centers on the relationship Will and Elizabeth have with each of their families. There’s a lot of dysfunction between Will and his father, and Will goes through a period in which he tries to figure out whether their relationship is at all salvageable. This excerpt shows Will trying to extend an olive branch of sorts to his father, which doesn’t exactly go as planned.

Excerpt

Will stood in his office at noon on Monday, cell phone to his ear, staring out the window toward Casco Bay. He paced a little as he waited for his call to be answered, and within moments, he heard his father’s deep voice.

“Fitzwilliam! How are you, son?”

“I’m good, Dad, how are you?”

“Busy. Always busy. How’s my grandson?”

Will leaned against his desk. “He’s great. He loves school. He’s getting taller, I think he’s going through a growth spurt or something. All of his clothes are suddenly too small.”

“He’ll be tall, like you.”

“I think so.”

Robert cleared his throat. “How’s business?”

Will didn’t miss the hesitancy in the question although he and his father had discussed Will’s new venture at length. They’d argued about it at first; Robert had been angry that his son was going into business for himself.

“Um, business is good so far,” Will answered. “Three clients. Nothing to throw a party over, but I expected to start slow.”

“Three clients in a few weeks isn’t bad. You’re working with a much smaller demographic now, remember that.”

“I know. Listen, um, I was wondering...” He took a deep breath. “How would you feel about visiting Maine?”

“Visiting Maine? Why would I want to do that?”

Will felt a spike of annoyance. “To see Jack.” He cleared his throat. “And me. And to meet Elizabeth.” His clarification was met with silence. “Dad?”

“My calendar is full, Fitzwilliam,” Robert replied brusquely. “I can’t just drop everything and travel to Maine on a whim.”

Will’s spike of annoyance grew to a surge. “I didn’t mean tomorrow, but that’s fine. Forget I asked.”

He was embarrassed and angry. He’d put it out there, put himself out there, and his father had shot him down without a second thought. An awkward, uncomfortable silence ensued.

“When were you thinking?” Robert asked quietly.

“Never. Forget it,” Will replied curtly, still smarting over his father’s rejection.

“I just didn’t expect the invitation, Fitzwilliam. Stop sulking.”

“I’m not sulking,” Will argued, knowing full well that he was. “What I’m doing is trying, Dad, don’t you see that?”

“But why? Why do you want me to go there and meet Elizabeth?”

Good question. “I want you to meet Elizabeth because I love her and she’s part of my life. And I want you to come here so we can talk. We need to talk.”

“We’re doing that now, aren’t we?” Robert said, a trace of sarcasm seeping into his voice. “Most people would call this a conversation.”

“And we’re doing a piss-poor job of it, as usual.” Will began pacing again, back and forth in front of the windows. “We don’t talk, we make polite conversation. That’s all we’re capable of, and I’m tired of it. Do you want to know why I’m trying? Because of Jack, that’s why.”

“Because of Jack?”

“Yes.” He refused to admit that he was trying for himself as well. “You are his only living grandparent.” And you are my only father. “I thought I would try to salvage something. But maybe I’m being stupid. God knows you haven’t earned a place in his life, not by a long shot. You’ve barely earned a place in mine.”

Even as the words shot out of his mouth, he felt a knot form in his chest. This is what he’d desperately wanted to avoid. He was tired of saying hurtful things just for the sheer satisfaction of knowing they’d struck their target, but neither of them could seem to help it.

A knock on the door distracted him, and he glanced away from the window to see Elizabeth poking her head in. She smiled brightly, and he couldn’t have imagined a more welcome sight.

Robert started to speak, but Will cut him off. “I have to go. I’ll talk to you soon.”

“Fitzwilliam—”

“I’ll call you, or you can call me. Whatever.”

“Alright, son. We’ll talk soon.” Robert sounded resigned. “Take care, and say hi to Jack for me, okay?”

“Yeah, sure. Bye, Dad.” Will pressed the button on his phone to end the call. Sighing, he turned from the windows and offered Elizabeth a half-hearted smile. “Hi, you.”

“Hi,” she said, closing the door behind her. “Hungry? I brought some lunch.” She placed the small brown bag she carried on the desk.

He grunted.

“Is that a yes or a no?” He was staring at the floor, and she lowered her head to catch his eye. “Hello... Up here.”

He lifted his eyes to hers. “I’m really not hungry, sorry. I’m glad you came by, though.” He opened his arms and she walked into them, hugging him tightly.

“I don’t think I need to ask why you don’t have an appetite,” she said before kissing his neck. “I take it your call didn’t go well?”

“Nope. Short and shitty.” He sighed, then buried his nose in her hair and inhaled deeply. “I had the thought when I was on the phone with him—why am I even bothering? Why waste the energy?”

“Did you even manage to get around to inviting him?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“He wanted to know why I thought he would want to visit...and then proceeded to tell me how busy he is.” He pulled himself out of her arms and turned to face the window again, shoving his hands into his pockets. “Lost cause.”

She wrapped her arms around his middle and rested her cheek against his back. “I’m sorry, Will.”

He shrugged, forcing nonchalance into his voice. “Don’t be. It’s not a big deal. Life goes on, right?”

“Maybe he just needs a little time to get used to the idea.”

“Well, he can take all the time he needs because that was the one and only time he’ll be invited.” He turned to face her and planted a quick kiss on the top of her head. “What did you bring for lunch?” He peeked into the bag. “Soup?”

“And a sandwich for us to share.”

He removed the containers from the bag and placed everything on his desk, then raised his eyes to hers and attempted a smile, though he was sure it probably looked more like a grimace.

She frowned. “Will—”

“Can we just eat? I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t want to beat it to death. It is what it is. I’m fine.”

“Okay,” she relented softly. She pulled a chair closer to his desk and smiled as she pulled napkins and spoons from the bag. “Chicken noodle or lobster bisque?”

About the Author

Cat Andrews has always been an avid reader, but didn’t discover Jane Austen until her love of a certain British actor led her to the BBC’s 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice, because she just had to know—why all the fuss over this Darcy guy? What followed her viewing of that glorious miniseries was an inhalation of and immediate fixation on all of Austen’s novels, though Pride and Prejudice remains her favorite (and that certain British actor will always be, to her, the quintessential Darcy).

Her discovery of Jane Austen Fan Fiction opened up a whole new world, and thus began her addiction, and months and months of sleep deprivation, as she immersed herself in JAFF. After reading a modern Pride and Prejudice variation that she fell in love with, she was inspired to begin a cautious but earnest foray into the world of writing.

In real life, Cat has spent thirty-plus years working in healthcare. She is a confirmed thalassophile and enjoys life on the shores of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where she grew up, fell in love with her own Mr. Darcy, and raised a family. More often than not, you can find her at the beach with a book in her hand and her toes in the sand.

Sanctuary is her debut novel.

What Are You Reading? ~ April 8, 2020

Hello, my friends! I hope this post finds you all well! I didn't get any reading done last week because I was busy making masks for my family and some of my kid's co-workers. And I forgot to post my Wednesday post! So, I'm going to let you know what I've been reading since the last time I posted! :)

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Current Read

I'm currently reading Lakeshire Park* by Megan Walker. I'm not too far into it, but I'm enjoying it! It's a Regency romance. I'm part of the upcoming blog tour and will be posting a review.

Recently Finished

I finished reading Educated: A Memoir* by Tara Westover. What a fascinating read! I thought the beginning when Tara was a child was a bit slow, but boy, as she got older, it was incredible. I don't know how her family survived some of the incidences she describes in the story. I couldn't stop reading it. ~ 5 stars.

I also finished reading Live, Love, Longbourn* by Jennifer Becton. I really enjoyed this feel-good story! I loved the quirky little town the Bennet sisters live in, and with Charlotte going to be the chef at Elizabeth's new Inn, I thought it had a little bit of a Gilmore Girls feel to it! I can't wait to read the rest of the sister's stories! ~ 4 stars

Jennifer Becton talks a little about what inspired her to write Live, Love, Longbourn. You can check that out here.

What's next?

I'm not sure... whatever catches my fancy! ;)

So, tell me, what are you reading? Stay safe out there!

Live, Love, Longbourn by Jennifer Becton ~ Guest Post & Giveaway!

Hello, my friends! I’m so excited to have Jennifer Becton visiting here today! I’ve read and enjoyed many of her books! Now, she has a new book out, and I’m thrilled about that! Live, Love, Longbourn is the first book in Becton’s A Bennet Sisters Series!

What Would Elizabeth Bennet Do?

Jane Austen is my literary idol. It’s amazing how the characters and plots she wrote in Pride and Prejudice have stood the test of time. Somehow they manage to adjust to contemporary life just as easily as they fit into their original Regency setting. That’s why there are so many fun retellings, continuations, and what-ifs.

Elizabeth Bennet is an inspirational character. She’s witty and wise without taking herself too seriously. But she’s also tough. She turns down Mr. Darcy’s ego-drive proposal and spars with Lady Catherine. She’s the type of strong woman that I’d like to be.

So when a difficult situation arises, I sometimes ask myself this question: what would Elizabeth Bennet do? After all, Jane Austen ought to be consulted on all matters of importance, like the best way to take coffee:

Sometimes, when I ponder what Elizabeth Bennet might do, my imagination runs wild. That’s how Live, Love, Longbourn came to be.

Recently, the barn where I board my horse (whose name is Darcy, btw) was threatened by a neighboring town. This particular town planned to incorporate into an official city and drew its boundaries to include my nearby community. The problem? The city planners had ulterior motives. They wanted to get their hands on the undeveloped farmland and forested land so they could profit from it. They didn’t care what the people of the rural community wanted. And the people of this small community didn’t want to be part of a city. So they fought to keep their land.

As I watched my barn owners battle to retain their way of life, I couldn’t help but note the similarities between their incorporation struggle and the financial straits the Bennet women faced in Pride and Prejudice. One day, Mr. Collins would inherit their family home. At that point, Mrs. Bennet and her daughters would lose their home and income. Though the details were not quite the same, the Bennets’ situation wasn’t so different from what I watched take place in my area. People in my community risked losing their family land and the ways they earned their living.

And that’s what got me wondering what Elizabeth Bennet would do if she found herself in this position….

Live, Love, Longbourn

The town-incorporation plot of Live, Love, Longbourn is loosely based on the events that took place in my nearby community. My plot is a highly fictionalized and exaggerated version of what happened. Any similarity between the characters in this book and real people is a total coincidence. (I sure hope there’s not a real Mr. Collins lurking out there somewhere!)

Elizabeth’s dream of refurbishing Longbourn Farm and opening it as a quaint mountain inn is on the cusp of coming true. But when the nearby city of Rosings threatens the future of her small farming town, Elizabeth must swallow her pride and ask for the help of Liam Darcy, the man who offended her and then disappeared years ago.

Successful sports marketing exec Liam Darcy returns to Meryton in the hopes of claiming his inheritance and escaping town quickly. But his plans change the moment he encounters Elizabeth Bennet, the only woman who might have tempted him to stay. When he discovers that his own aunt Catherine de Bourgh and her henchman Arthur Collins are threatening the future of Meryton, he decides he must not allow it.

Together, Elizabeth and Liam must fight the overreaching grasp of the city of Rosings before it destroys not only the town of Meryton but the future of Elizabeth and all the Bennet sisters.

Live, Love, Longbourn is the first book in the Bennet Sisters Series, a modern retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice in three parts. Each book focuses on one of the Bennet sisters who played a prominent role in Pride and Prejudice: Elizabeth, Jane, and Lydia. Set in the quaint mountain town of Meryton, Georgia, this series is like Jane Austen meets the Hallmark Channel.

So if you love small town romance, modern Jane Austen retellings, and Hallmark movies, check out Live, Love, Longbourn.

About the Author

Jennifer Becton worked for more than twelve years in the traditional publishing industry as a freelance writer, editor, and proofreader. In 2010, she created Whiteley Press, LLC, an independent publishing house. She is a die-hard Jane Austen fan. While she loves Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, she has a not-so-secret fondness for Austen’s minor characters like Charlotte Lucas and Caroline Bingley. She always wondered what happened to those characters next. So she wrote her own version of their stories. She also writes mysteries under the name J. W. Becton.
