What Are You Reading? ~ June 24th, 2020

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Oh, my! I have been in a major reading slump. I don't think I've been in one this bad since I started this blog. I'm like 3 books behind on my Goodreads Reading Challenge when I was 6 books ahead about 2 months ago. 🤦‍♀️

Ok, let's see where I am. Its been a few weeks since I've posted.

Current Read

I'm currently reading One Perfect Summer* by Brenda Novak. I pick this one up the other night when I couldn't sleep, and I needed something to read in bed. So, far it's good! Although I'm only about 6% into it.

Recently Finished

I recently finished The Jane Austen Society* by Natalie Jenner. I should have my review up on Monday the 29th. It was hard for me to get into, but I did enjoy the last half!

I also finished reading What's Left of My World* by C.A. Rudolph. It was good, and someday I would like to read the next in the series.

What's next?

I want to read Shannon Winslow's Murder at Northanger Abbey*! It sounds like a fun sequel to Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey.

As far as my reading slump, I think my interests have been elsewhere. I have been sewing more lately. First, I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and some BluPrint classes to inspire me and to brush up on my rusty sewing skills. Plus, I never seem to buy the right fabric, so I concentrated on learning more about the different fabric types. I ordered a few cotton lawn prints for some tops, and I'm ready to get to work.

I think I should start listening to audiobooks while I sew! :)

So, tell me, what are you reading?

What Are You Reading? ~ June 3, 2020

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finish reading, and what you plan on reading next!

I hope you are well and keeping safe! Oh, I have been on a reading slump lately! I finally finished a book. Lol! So, here's what I've been reading for the last couple of weeks.

Current Read

I'm currently still reading What's Left Of My World* by C.A. Rudolph. I'm almost finished! Yay! It's a good story, but I'm not sure if I was really in the mood to read a post-apocalyptic story at the moment. With all the unrest in the country.

Recently Finished

I finished reading Secondborn (Bk 1)* by Amy A. Bartol. This is the first of three books in the Secondborn Series. It was very good. Lots of world-building and it leaves off unfinished so you'll need to read the whole series. Secondborns are born to serve firstborns and to replace them if they die. They are second class citizens and have no rights. Of course, a rebellion is coming! :) ~ 4 stars.

What next?

I'm going to start The Jane Austen Society* by Natalie Jenner. I'm so looking forward to this! Hopefully, it will get me out of this slump!

What Are You Reading? ~ May 20, 2020

* * Post contains affiliate links. * *

Happy Wednesday, friends! My reading has slowed way down. My daughter asked me to show her how to crochet - I was thrilled!! Anyway, we've been staying up late crocheting and rewatching Parks and Rec episodes! So fun! Which means since I mostly read at night, I've not been reading as much. I'm not complaining, though! I love spending time with her!

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

I didn't post last week, so this is from the previous two weeks.

Current Read

I'm still reading What's Left Of My World* by C.A. Rudolph. It's pretty good! The story starts about a year after an EMP episode, which is different from most of the stories I've read. I'm enjoying it!

Recently Finished

I finished reading What Unbreakable Looks Like* by Kate McLaughlin. It's a story about a girl, Lex (or Poppy, the name her pimp gave her), who was rescued from sex traffickers. The story begins the night of her rescue. The pull to go back to her pimp and that life, as horrible as it is, is so interesting! It seems like a realistic look at what Lex had to go through to recover from that situation and how she was seduced into that life. I was rooting for Lex the whole time! ~ 4 stars  (my review show go up on June 18 for the book's blog tour)

What's next?

I still want to read Only a Breath Apart* by Katie McGarry.

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Hello, my friends! I skipped last week, but I'm back. I've been sewing and crocheting more lately. :) I've really enjoyed it! I've been watching a bunch of videos and online classes to brush up on some techniques I've forgotten (I used to sew all the time!). So, my reading has slowed down a bit.

Current Read

I started reading What's Left of My World: A Story of a Family's Survival* by C.A. Rudolph. I'm not very far into it, so nothing to report.

Recently Finished

I finished reading Taken* by Mary Anne Mushatt. I will have my review up on Monday as part of the Taken Blog Tour. I hope you can stop by!

I also finished Attachments* by Rainbow Rowell. The emails between Beth and Jennifer were fun to read and had me laughing quite a few times. The middle of the story slowed down a little, but it picked up and had a great ending! I love Rowell's writing! I would highly recommend any of her books. 4 stars

What's next?

I'm probably going to read Only a Breath Apart* by Katie McGarry. I've read some of her other books and love them! I'm looking forward to this one.

What Are You Reading? ~ Jan. 15, 2020

* * Post contains affiliate links. * *

Happy Wednesday, friends! I've had a fabulous reading week! I hope you have too!

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Current Read

I'm currently reading two books. I'm rereading Lady Susan* by Jane Austen for the JASNA Reading Group I belong to. We meet this Saturday. I love meeting up with these ladies!

I'm also rereading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone* by J.K. Rowling. I love the Harry Potter series and find my self rereading them starting around Christmas. I thought about maybe skipping it this year... I'm not sure if I'll read all of them, but I do love them, and it's easy to get sucked into the story. :)

Recently Finished

I tore through three books this week! Love it! Woot! I don't do that very often at all. :)

I finished reading Sanditon: Official iTV Tie-In Edition* by Kate Riordan. I enjoyed it. I hope there is a sequel in the works because the ending was a little disappointing.

My full review will be posted on Feb. 24 as part of the Sanditon Blog Tour. ~ I think I'm giving it 3.5 stars. I'm still rolling that around in my mind.

I've watched the first two episodes of the series on PBS. Do you have plans to watch them?

I also read The Storm (H2O, #2)* by Virginia Bergin. I really liked it! It was much better than the first in the series. I adore crazy, irresponsible Ruby! All I can say is she is lucky she survived at all! For me, this was just a fun book to read. ~ 4.5 stars.

Plus, I read I Am Still Alive* by Kate Alice Marshall. I love survival stories, and that's what this was. Sixteen-year-old Jess, whose leg was severely damaged in a car accident - which also killed her mother. She is sent to live with her father, who lives in the middle of nowhere! She misses her mother and is irritated with her father. Shortly after she gets there, her father is murdered, and she is left alone. It's almost winter, she knows nothing about surviving in a forest, and she is worried the men who killed her father will come back. Thank goodness Bo, her dad's dog is there. Jess is angry, scared, and has a strong will to survive. This was an intense, action-packed story that had me on the edge of my seat! ~ 4.5 stars.

What's next?

I'm not sure, but I'm thinking about reading Call it What You Want by Brigid Kemmerer. It's been sitting on my shelf for a while and would like to read it! Lol! It looks cute.

Wow! What a great week for me! :) Like I said, that doesn't happen much. I hope it happens again! Lol!

Please share what you've been reading! I'd love to hear!

What Are You Reading? ~ Jan. 8, 2020

* * Post contains affiliate links. * *

Happy New Year!! Not my first post of the year, but my first What Are You Reading? I'm going to try to be more consistent this year with this post. I missed quite a few Wednesdays last year. I hope you'll join me!

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Current Read

I'm currently reading Sanditon* by Jane Austen and Kate Riordan. This book is based on Andrew Davies' TV adaptation of Jane's unfinished novel. I'm curious to see how closely Kate Riordan followed the show. I'm definitely going to watch it when it comes to the states. How about you?

Recently Finished

Here's what I've read since Christmas.

I finished listening to Nefarious: A Pride and Prejudice Variation* by Nicole Clarkston. I love Nicole's stories, but to be honest, this wasn't one of my favorites. I didn't like how angry Darcy is, nor did I like the way he treats Jane. I also wasn't fond of Georgiana in this story. I know many people have loved it, but it just wasn't for me. - 3 stars

I also read H2O (The Rain, #1)* by Virginia Bergin. This is a fascinating premise. What if the rain was deadly? And what if that rain seeped in the ground and ruined the water supply? There would be nothing to drink!

Being a YA novel, the protagonist was more concerned about her social life and her phone. This annoyed me a little, but then reality hits her, and she learns what she needs to do to survive. I really enjoyed the story, and I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series!  - 4 stars

I also read Black Autumn* by Jeff Kirkham & Jason Ross. This post-apocalyptic was more realistic. It's about a group of Special Forces vets and preppers who have a compound ready for if the world falls apart. And it does fall apart. I enjoyed this story. - 4 stars.

What's next?

I'm going to re-read Lady Susan* by Jane Austen for my reading group. That's a short story, so I'll probably start The Storm (The Rain, #2)* by Virginia Bergin too. :)

What Are You Reading? ~ Nov. 13th, 2019

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Current Read

I'm currently re-reading Holidays with Jane: Thankful Hearts* by Rebecca M. Fleming, Jennifer Becton, Melissa Buell, Nancy Kelley, Cecilia Gray, and Jessica Grey. I'm reading this with my JASNA reading group. It's a fun set of modern Jane Austen short stories!

Recently Finished

I finished reading One Second After* by William R. Forstchen. Wow, it was good and so intense! It's about a small town in North Carolina, and their struggle to survive after an EMP goes off and shuts down the country. The story looked at so many aspects of the aftermath from an EMP, not only trying to find food and defending it from raiders. But also not having proper medications; for instance, diabetics, what happens to them. What happens to hospitals, nursing homes, and with communications down, there is no way to find out if or when help is coming. So many things to think about. What a page-turner! ~ 5 stars

I also finished listening to The Girl With No Name* by Diney Costeloe.  Another great book for me this week! Lisa is a Jewish refugee who is sent to London just before the Blitz during WWII. She slowly learns English and starts to feel comfortable with her foster family when she gets hurt during a bombing. Her new family thinks she is dead, and she has no memory of them or who she is. I really enjoyed listening to this story and loved following Lisa as she grows into a young woman. Also, the secondary characters are wonderful too. ~ 5 stars

What's next?

I'm thinking about reading The Knight Before Christmas* by Marilyn Brant, who kindly gifted me a copy! Ooh, it looks so good!

What Are You Reading? ~ Nov. 6th, 2019

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Current Read

I'm currently reading One Second After* by William R. Forstchen. I'm enjoying it immensely! It's so intense. What I like about this one is that it explains more of how an EMP works - how it fries all electronics. Also, you see more of a small town trying to survive and maintain civility, instead of just a couple of people (preppers) trying to survive. It's interesting, and it makes you think.

I'm still listening to The Girl With No Name* by Diney Costeloe. I'm about 60% finished and loving it! It's about a Jewish refugee teenager sent to London just before the Blitz during WWII.

Recently Finished

I finished reading Looking for Alaska* by John Green. It was good, and now I'm watching the series on Hulu. One thing, for a YA, I thought it was a little too mature.

What's next?

My reading group is reading Holidays with Jane: Thankful Hearts* by Rebecca M. Fleming, Jennifer Becton, Melissa Buell, Nancy Kelley, Cecilia Gray, and Jessica Grey, so that's what I'll probably read! I've already read it, but it will be fun to read again.

What Are You Reading? ~ Oct. 30th, 2019

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Current Read

I'm currently reading Looking for Alaska* by John Green. I'm not very far into this, but I'm enjoying it. It's an easy read. I'm trying to read this before watching the series on Hulu! :)

I'm also listening to The Girl With No Name* by Diney Costeloe, a WWII story. It's so good! I'm about a third of the way through.

Recently Finished

I finished reading Pride and Prometheus* by John Kessel. This was really good. Kessel kept true to the original Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (which I have read) while adding the Bennet's to the story. Mary and Kitty Bennet are the main characters pulled from Pride and Prejudice, although you will see appearances from most of them. I do have one quibble with the story, but mentioning it would be a spoiler. Otherwise, it was a great read! ~ 4 stars

I also finished Rules of Conflict (Survival Rules #2)* by Jack Hunt. I had put this one down for a while but picked it back up. It was okay. ~ 3 stars

What's next?

I think I'm going to read One Second After* by William R. Forstchen, which is a post-apocalyptic/ EMP story.

Happy Wednesday! It's late in the day, but it's still Wednesday!

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Currently Reading:

I've just started reading The Bride of Northanger by Diana Birchall. I'm looking forward to digging into this sequel to Austen's Northanger Abbey!

Recently Finished:

I recently finished re-reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Again, I really enjoyed it! ~ 5 stars

I also read Wool by Hugh Howey! This was a great story! So very interesting! These people are living in this huge underground silo because the earth above is very toxic. Law and order have to be strictly regulated. If something should go wrong, it could mean the end of their society. When people break the law, they are sent out to clean the cameras outside - their link to the world above ground. The cleaners never survive long. But there's trouble brewing for the people in the silo! ~ 5 stars

What's next?

I may re-read the next in The Hunger Games series, Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. It's been 5 years since I've read this series.
