What Unbreakable Looks Like Blog Tour ~ My Review

Hello, my friends! Today as part of the What Unbreakable Looks Like Blog Tour, I have my review for you to read!

My Review

What Unbreakable Looks Like is a raw, heartbreaking, and hopeful story. It shows what a person can go through and come out on the other side, maybe not whole, but strong and courageous.

The story begins the night Lex and Ivy are rescued from the motel where they were sold for sex. At the hospital, Ivy runs away, back to her pimp. Lex stays, and her long road to recovery begins. It’s not easy, and there are many times she wants to go back. You may ask why someone would want to go back to a life of abuse. Often the girls are brainwashed by their pimps, and many are addicted to drugs.

Lex is lucky. She has a fantastic support system and the will to go on. She doesn’t always make the right decisions, but I think that’s what makes the story feel so real.

I would give What Unbreakable Looks Like a mature rating for language and some sexual scenes. Although not detailed, it was enough to make me uncomfortable.

What Unbreakable Looks Like
by Kate McLaughlin

Expected Publication Date: June 23, 2020
Publisher: Wednesday Books
Pages: 336
Received: I received an e-copy from the publisher for my honest review.
Rating: 4 stars

Book Description:

Lex was taken–trafficked–and now she’s Poppy. Kept in a hotel with other girls, her old life is a distant memory. But when the girls are rescued, she doesn’t quite know how to be Lex again.

After she moves in with her aunt and uncle, for the first time in a long time, she knows what it is to feel truly safe. Except, she doesn’t trust it. Doesn't trust her new home. Doesn’t trust her new friend. Doesn’t trust her new life. Instead she trusts what she shouldn’t because that's what feels right. She doesn’t deserve good things.

But when she is sexually assaulted by her so-called boyfriend and his friends, Lex is forced to reckon with what happened to her and that just because she is used to it, doesn’t mean it is okay. She’s thrust into the limelight and realizes she has the power to help others. But first she’ll have to confront the monsters of her past with the help of her family, friends, and a new love.

Kate McLaughlin’s What Unbreakable Looks Like is a gritty, ultimately hopeful novel about human trafficking through the lens of a girl who has escaped the life and learned to trust, not only others, but in herself.

Early Praise:

"With unflinching honesty, What Unbreakable Looks Like exposes the injuries and scars we wear on our skins or in our souls. Hidden damage is tragically common, but helpful others who dared embrace hope invite Alexa to step onto the healing path. This novel may offer a springboard for a reader's own healing or foster empathy for life's walking wounded." - Liz Coley, author of international bestseller Pretty Girl-13

"Raw, unflinching, and authentic, Kate McLaughlin's thoughtful What Unbreakable Looks Like carefully crafts a story exposing the vulnerability of underage trafficked girls and what it takes to begin the process of healing from sexual trauma." - Christa Desir, author, advocate, and founding member of The Voices and Faces Project

“This is a powerful book about a sobering topic that I found myself thinking about for days after I completed it. It is wonderfully poignant, painfully real, and even laugh out loud funny at times. Not everyone can truly wrap their minds around the trauma these victims endure and yet somehow, despite all of it, are still just regular kids. But Kate McLaughlin gets it. ‘Lex’ is truly what unbreakable looks like and you’ll fall in love with her spirit.” - Tanya Compagnone, Trooper First Class

“Sex trafficking continues to seep into all our communities. In this novel, Kate McLaughlin brings to life the trauma that transpires in youth who forced into the life of sex trafficking. Her novel is a reminder that each of us can make a difference in someone’s life.” - Dina R. St. George, MSW, Juvenile Re-Entry Unit OCPD

What Are You Reading? ~ May 20, 2020

* * Post contains affiliate links. * *

Happy Wednesday, friends! My reading has slowed way down. My daughter asked me to show her how to crochet - I was thrilled!! Anyway, we've been staying up late crocheting and rewatching Parks and Rec episodes! So fun! Which means since I mostly read at night, I've not been reading as much. I'm not complaining, though! I love spending time with her!

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

I didn't post last week, so this is from the previous two weeks.

Current Read

I'm still reading What's Left Of My World* by C.A. Rudolph. It's pretty good! The story starts about a year after an EMP episode, which is different from most of the stories I've read. I'm enjoying it!

Recently Finished

I finished reading What Unbreakable Looks Like* by Kate McLaughlin. It's a story about a girl, Lex (or Poppy, the name her pimp gave her), who was rescued from sex traffickers. The story begins the night of her rescue. The pull to go back to her pimp and that life, as horrible as it is, is so interesting! It seems like a realistic look at what Lex had to go through to recover from that situation and how she was seduced into that life. I was rooting for Lex the whole time! ~ 4 stars  (my review show go up on June 18 for the book's blog tour)

What's next?

I still want to read Only a Breath Apart* by Katie McGarry.

A Danger to Herself and Others by Alyssa Sheinmel ~ Book Review

Hey there, friends! It's release day for A Danger to Herself and Others by Alyssa Sheinmel! Below you'll find my review. I hope you enjoy it!

Congrats to Alyssa Sheinmel! 🎉

A Danger to Herself and Others
by Alyssa Sheinmel

Publication Date: Feb 5th, 2019
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire

Received: From the publisher via NetGalley.
Rating: 4 stars

Only when she’s locked away does the truth begin to escape…

Four walls. One window. No way to escape. Hannah knows there's been a mistake. She didn't need to be institutionalized. What happened to her roommate at her summer program was an accident. As soon as the doctors and judge figure out that she isn't a danger to herself or others, she can go home to start her senior year. In the meantime, she is going to use her persuasive skills to get the staff on her side.

Then Lucy arrives. Lucy has her own baggage. And she may be the only person who can get Hannah to confront the dangerous games and secrets that landed her in confinement in the first place.

My Review

A Danger to Herself and Others is a compelling YA story about mental illness.

It’s the summer before senior year, and Hannah is in California at an intensive study program. Everything is going great until Hannah’s roommate, Agnes, falls out of a second story window playing a game of Truth or Dare, and Hannah finds herself locked in a mental institution. The authorities think she made have been responsible for the accident. They say she is a danger to herself & others, but it wasn’t her fault, and she is sure once the misunderstanding is cleared up they will release her.

The story is told from Hannah’s POV; you’re in Hannah’s head and only see her realities. Because of this there were times I felt things were slightly off or not realistic, but as the story moves along and details are revealed, it starts to become clear, and I understood why things were the way they were.

Things get more interesting when Lucy, who becomes Hannah’s new BFF, is brought to the institution, and Hannah starts focusing on Lucy's problems. Lucy is a ballerina and has an eating disorder. There is an important audition she needs to get to, but she's stuck in the institution. Hannah wants to help Lucy, and it won't hurt if the doctor sees what a good friend Hannah can be, right?

I really enjoyed A Danger to Herself and Others! It was fascinating to see how Hannah perceives her situation. The mind is an interesting creature, indeed!

What Are You Reading? ~ Dec. 5, 2018

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Wow! I didn't realize it was Wednesday! Well, better late than never, right?

Here's my list:

Reading

I'm currently reading A Short Period of Exquisite Felicity by A D'Orazio. I love it so far!  I won this book from the Meryton Press Facebook page. Yay!

I haven't finished Emma by Jane Austen. I need to get on that, my book group meeting is coming up soon! (this is a reread for me)

I also haven't finished The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, and I don't think I will. Too much sex for me, and I'm not sure I'm buying that Stella gets over her aversion to being touched as quickly as she seems to in this story.

Finished

I recently finished listening to This Too is Love by Anya Monroe. What a fabulous story! It was an emotional and touching journey in the life of a pregnant teenage girl. 4.5 stars

I also finished listening to Kissing Under the Mistletoe by Marina Adair. This was a fun Christmas romance, and a great way to pass the time while I was traveling! 4 stars

And I finished A Danger to Herself and Others by Alyssa Sheinmel. I enjoy this one too! I'm going to review this one if I can find the time! I'm doing a lot of traveling this month.

What's next? I'm not sure! :)

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finished reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Here's my list:

I'm currently reading A Danger to Herself and Others by Alyssa Sheinmel. I'm enjoying it! Hannah has been put into a mental institution after her best friend Agnes has a terrible accident. It wasn't Hannah's fault, and she is sure once the misunderstanding is cleared up they will let her out. The story is told from Hannah's POV; you're in Hannah's head and only see her realities, and slowly the details are being revealed. It kind of has a Girl, Interrupted feel to it.

I recently finished reading Unwrapping Mr. Darcy by L.L. Diamond. It was a fun read! I will have my review for it up tomorrow!

I also finished The Carriage Ride: A Pride and Prejudice Short Story by Mary Lydon Simonsen. I enjoyed this little snapshot of what-if Darcy and Elizabeth had to share a carriage ride together shortly after that disastrous proposal! Could they iron out their misunderstandings?

What's next? I would like to read The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang. I've heard a lot of good things about it!

Sadie by Courtney Summers ~ My Review

Sadie
by Courtney Summers

Publication Date: September 4, 2018
Publisher: Wednesday Books
Pages: 378 (Kindle Edition)
Received: From the publisher via NetGalley.
Rating: 4 stars

A missing girl on a journey of revenge and a Serial-like podcast following the clues she's left behind.

Sadie hasn't had an easy life. Growing up on her own, she's been raising her sister Mattie in an isolated small town, trying her best to provide a normal life and keep their heads above water.

But when Mattie is found dead, Sadie's entire world crumbles. After a somewhat botched police investigation, Sadie is determined to bring her sister's killer to justice and hits the road following a few meager clues to find him.

When West McCray—a radio personality working on a segment about small, forgotten towns in America—overhears Sadie's story at a local gas station, he becomes obsessed with finding the missing girl. He starts his own podcast as he tracks Sadie's journey, trying to figure out what happened, hoping to find her before it's too late.

My Review

I was fascinated by this YA mystery! Sadie is a gripping story of a girl (Sadie) who disappears a few months after her little sister, Mattie, was murdered. Devastated, Sadie sets out to find Mattie’s killer.

Throughout the story, we slowly learn the awful truth’s of Sadie’s lonely life with her mother, what she endured growing up, and how she tried to make a difference in Mattie’s life. How she wanted to protect Mattie.

West McCray, a producer and radio personality, receives a call from May Beth, the girls' surrogate grandmother, who asks West to help locate Sadie. He agrees. He also begins a serialized podcast chronicling his investigation with interviews and information he uncovers along the way.

The story is told from two points of view. One from Sadie’s and the other in the form of McCray’s podcast, “The Girls.” The cool thing is you can actually listen to the podcast on Apple or Stitcher

Although the podcast is really well done, and I listened to most of the episodes before I started reading the book, I found it a little redundant as the podcast is pretty much word for word what is written in the book. I would have liked some added information, but again, the podcast is brilliant and well made.

Sadie meets some interesting people during her quest, and there are some twists and turns in the story, some I didn’t see coming! And as in life, there are some questions we never find an answer to.

Sadie is a raw, dark and engrossing novel. I wasn’t sure what Sadie’s plan was, or if she even knew. I didn't know if she would find the man she was looking for, or if she did, could she accomplish what she set out to do - which is to kill him.

What are you Reading?  Let me know what your current read is, what you recently finish reading, and what you plan on reading next!

Here's my list:

I'm currently reading Sadie by Courtney Summers. I'm not too far into it, but I'm enjoying it! Tomorrow, as part of the blog tour, I have a post going up about this book. The book will be available Sept. 4, but there is a podcast that goes along with the story that's already out. You can find it on Apple or Stitcher.

I recently finished Solar Plexus by Victor Zugg. It was pretty good! Lots of action with a lot of military encounters. 4 stars.

What's next? I just joined a reading group, and the first book we're reading is Persuasion by Jane Austen. I'm looking for to the discussion! It's a re-read for all of us, I think.

~*~

Derek

A knot forms in my gut, a thick and oily clot of guilt. I sink on to the first bench I spot, clutching my middle and trying like hell not to puke. Damn it, I wish to hell I’d beaten the snot out of Victor Patton.
     Came close to it.
     “Hey, man.”
I twitch and find some guy sitting beside me. No idea where he came from. He’s older than I am, but not by much. Mid-twenties, maybe? Dark hair, dark eyes, some serious muscle.
I nod and shift away, willing my stomach to settle down.
“I’m gonna say something to you,” the guy says. “And you can tell me to buzz off, or you can listen. I see you sitting here, green around the gills, gripping one of those rally flyers, and see a look on your face I know well.”
I shift back to study him. He meets my gaze without flinching, and there’s something in his tone that tells me he’s not kidding.
“Somebody you love got assaulted,” he says, and before I can say anything—before I can even think of something to say—he adds, “Me too.”
I stare at him in disbelief. Are we supposed to do some kind of male bonding over rape...some sort of weird bro hug and then share our feelings? That kink in my gut unclenches, and my breakfast comes up and out. I manage to turn away before I ruin this guy’s day and spew into the bushes behind the bench. It takes a few minutes. When I’m finally empty and want to crawl into the gutter to die, the guy shoves a bottle of water into my field of vision.
     “Take it. Keep it.”
Grateful, I crack the seal, chug, and rinse out my mouth. Then I take a nice gulp, sit back on the bench, and wipe my mouth. “Thanks,” I offer a few minutes later, when I’m sure I’m not dying.
     “Yeah, no big.”
There’s a long pause. “Girlfriend?” he asks after a minute. And it takes me another minute to figure out he’s asking who I know that got raped. I shake my head.
     “Sister.”
     “Oh, man. I’m sorry.”
I only nod. What else is there to say? In silence, we watch the perky girl with the clipboard chase down two guys on Rollerblades to sign up for the rally.
He snorts out a laugh. “That girl has some serious fun attitude.”
I laugh, too. “That’s an oxymoron, no?”
Shrugging, he says, “Maybe. Never could keep those lit terms straight.”
That makes me wonder about him. “You’re not a student?”
“No,” he admits. “I graduated a few years ago. Degree in engineering. I work in the city now.”
“So what are you doing here?”
He sighs and looks back to the quad where Perky Girl’s got another pair of guys on the hook for rally duty. “Over there. Under the Rock Stock tent. Black boots.”
I scan the area, find the tent, and see a bunch of people under it. But the black boots do it for me. The girl is hot, like off-the-charts hot. Long wild hair, dark sunglasses, jeans, and a black shirt that’s held together with a series of metal rings. She looks like the lead singer from some hard rock band.
     “Oh! I’m sorry. Was she—”
“Yeah. Back in high school. By my friend. At a party she only went to because she hoped I’d be there.”
     “I'm sorry.” I sigh.
“I came over here to talk to you because you looked like— well, like a guy about to puke.”
My face gets hot. I swallow another gulp of water and look away. But I can’t deny I’m curious. “How do you...” Deal with it? Avoid killing the guy who did it? I wave my hand, trying to fill in that blank but coming up empty.
He angles his head, studying me. “Get over my guilt?”
     Okay. That works, too.
He takes another look at the girl in the black boots and shrugs.
“Still working on it. Being here is part of it. She’s doing the keynote speech at the rally. Took me a while, but I finally figured out that therapy’s not so bad, either.”
My parents wanted us all to go to therapy, but I said no way. Maybe that was a mistake. “Can I ask you something?”
     The guy nods.
I swallow more water. “You ever say something you can’t take back? Something that made her hate you.”
He grins and rolls his eyes. “God, yes. I can’t watch a Star Wars movie without wanting to kick my own ass.”
     “Huh?”
He waves a hand. “Long story. I was a real dick to her, embarrassing her in front of my friends so they wouldn’t turn on me. She forgave me. Somewhere along the line, I figured out how to forgive myself so I could be the man she deserves.”
Forgive myself. That’s exactly what Brittany said. I consider that for a couple of minutes and then shake my head. “I gotta go.” I stand up. “Thanks for the water and for—” I wave a hand. “You know.”
“Yeah. No problem. Hope we see you at the rally. Trust me, she’s something.” He jerks a thumb toward the girl in the black boots, and I don’t doubt him for a second.
     “Yeah. Maybe.”
     He extends a hand. “Ian.”
I shake it. “Derek,” I say. “Thanks again.”
“Here.” He fishes through his pockets and comes out with a business card. “My cell number. I can help. If you want.”
I take off, tucking the card into my pocket along with the blue-and-white flyer. I don’t even know why I’m keeping them. It’s not like there’s any way Ashley’s gonna forgive me. I’m not even sure I can forgive myself. I’ll never be the hero again in her eyes.

Patty Blount grew up quiet and somewhat invisible in Queens, NY, but found her voice writing smart and strong characters willing to fight for what’s right. Today, she’s the award-winning author of edgy, realistic, gut-wrenching contemporary and young adult romance. Still a bit introverted, she gets lost often, eats way too much chocolate, and tends to develop mad, passionate crushes on fictional characters…and actors like Gilles Marini….and Sam Heughan. Okay, so Patty’s not nearly as cool as her characters, but she is a solid supporter of women’s rights and loves delivering school presentations.

Patty is best known for her internet issues novels, including SOME BOYS, a 2015 CLMP Firecracker winner and RWA Rita Finalist, and SEND, a 2012 Junior Library Guild Fall Pick.
