Review & Giveaway: Attempting Elizabeth by Jessica Grey

Amazing! That’s the word I would use to describe Attempting Elizabeth! I truly loved this story! I felt it had a fun uniqueness about it. I loved the whole novel jumping aspect of the story, but there was much more to it than that...I don’t know if I can say anything about it without giving anything away. But I will give it a try!

Kelsey Edmundson is going through a rough spot in her life. She recently broke up her with boyfriend and would rather stay home and read her favorite novel, Pride and Prejudice, but her best friend Tori Mansfield has different ideas. Tori drags Kelsey to a club for the evening where she meets Mark Barnes, a hot Aussie with an amazing accent. Unfortunately, Kelsey is stand-offish, bordering on rude to Mark. After that night, they are thrown together a couple of times and Kelsey is always awkward, and the two cannot have a conversation that doesn’t end up badly. Kelsey is really attracted to Mark and wonders why she can’t just act normal around him!

Feeling like a total idiot, Kelsey retreats back home and to her favorite book where the strangest thing happens, she falls asleep reading and wakes up in Pride and Prejudice as Georgiana Darcy! She is there quite a bit before she learns how to get back out of the book. Soon, Kelsey begins jumping in and out of Pride and Prejudice hoping to become Elizabeth Bennet.

I could really identify with Kelsey. I loved her experiences while she’s in the book, and how she grows from them. I also liked how Mark questions her, and how he pushes her to think about herself; whom she is. And in the end she finds herself and maybe even love.

I found it so interesting that the roles were reversed here, Kelsey is more like Darcy with her awkwardness and stand-offish ways and Mark was more like Elizabeth, smart, fun and gorgeous! Ok, Elizabeth has fine eyes, but I couldn't resist saying gorgeous because that describes Mark.

Grey has a gift for storytelling! Attempting Elizabeth is a fun, cute modern Austenesque novel. This is the second book I have read of hers. In Awake, she put a unique spin on Sleeping Beauty (read my review here).

Review: In Need of Therapy By Tracie Banister

In Need of Therapy is a fun, spicy read, with its colorful characters and lively Cuban family.

Pilar Alvarez is struggling to get her therapy practice off the ground. With a bunch of kooky patients and some just as interesting relatives, Pilar Alvarez has her hands full! Her mother is pressuring her to find a husband before she turns 30. Finding a husband is not the problem, finding love is. Pilar’s cheating ex-boyfriend is pursuing her hard, trying to win her back. There is Pilar’s hot new patient ....she couldn’t date her patient, could she? How about her sexy new neighbor Dr. Jonathan Fordham? Hmm...the ring on his finger says otherwise. That’s not all she has to worry about, her wild younger sister, Izzy is getting into trouble, and her landlord is raising her rent on her office! What more could go wrong?

I got a kick out of Pilar’s family! Her over dramatic mother, Izzy’s wild ways, and Pilar’s out-of-control nephews! Izzy really liked to go against the grain, especially against her mother. She loved the attention!

I have to say, at one point during the story, I started getting frustrated with Victor (Pilar’s ex), Izzy, and Pilar’s mother. I felt like Pilar was too soft on them. She was even too easy on her nephew when he set the couch on fire! I almost quit reading right there, but I’m so glad I didn’t! In the end, everything worked out beautifully!

I loved her best friend, Sara. I also enjoyed listening in on her therapy session with her patients. There is an interesting twist or two that happens with her patients that I really enjoyed!

I really liked In Need of Therapy! I loved the mix of people and personalities in the story.

Review: Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Match by Marilyn Brant

Marilyn Brant has written another wonderful story! In this modern twist Brant brings Pride and Prejudice into the present with all its technology, like online dating!

To prove her theory that men are of a certain stereotypical type Beth Ann Bennet joins an online dating service called Lady Catherine's Love Match to find the perfect man to base her research paper on. She figures she gather all the info she needs within a few emails and maybe one meeting -- then end it. What she doesn't count on is handsome Dr. Darcy, the man she had picked out of all her possible matches.

Meanwhile, Will Darcy has joined Lady Catherine's Love Match for his own reasons, but he’s not looking for love either. No, he has a bet with his cousin, Bingley, and if Darcy wins the bet he'll get the funding he needs for his health clinic. But when he meets Beth everything changes! He is drawn to her more than he thought was possible. As they both fall in love with each other, is their love strong enough to stand firm when the truth comes out?

I found it interesting how Brant put a different twist to the characters of Pride and Prejudice. For instants, Jane is Beth’s best friend, not her sister. Bingley has more money than Darcy. And the name Beth gives as her real name on Lady Catherine’s Love Match is Charlotte Lucas! Loved it! And the obstacles that Darcy and Beth have to overcome are in tune with today's society.

I would have liked to see Jane and Bingley’s storyline developed more. I think they would be another perfect match!

I love a story that gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside, and that’s just what Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Match did to me! I LOVED it! It’s a perfect book to curl up on a couch with!

The Pride and Prejudice Bicentenary Challenge 2013

Hi Everyone!

Ok Ok, after failing the two challenges I signed up for last year I wasn't going to sign up for more than one this year, but after wallowing in self pity for a couple of weeks ;) I'm feeling better! And I'm ready to take on the world! Or better yet, to take on a couple more challenges! Beside the basic Goodreads reading challenge, I'm signing up for The Pride and Prejudice Bicentenary Challenge 2013 hosted by Austenprose!

What's so cool about this challenge is there are so many choices to pick from, from Austen's orginal writings to sequels and spinoffs! And you're not limited to just books -- MOVIES count too!!

I am choosing to do the Disciple level, which means I have to complete 5 to 8 selections. Seems easy enough.

Here's my plan so far (subject to change):

1. Pride, Prejudice, and the Perfect Match by Marilyn Brant -- completed (my review)

2. The Last Man in the World by Abigail Reynolds (re-read) -- completed (my review)

3. Pride and Prejudice DVD 2005 version with my favorite Darcy, Matthew MacFadyen :)

4. Attempting Elizabeth by Jessica Grey (A new Austenesque novel just released!) -- completed (my review)

5. A Fair Prospect by Cassandra Grafton (A new P&P inspired story coming soon!)

6. Loving Miss Darcy by Nancy Kelley (A P&P sequel just released!) -- completed (my review)

7. A Most Civil Proposal by C. P. Odom -- completed (my review)

8. All the Appearance of Goodness by Maria Grace -- completed (my review)

9. When They Fall in Love by Mary Lydon Simonsen -- completed (my review)

There you have it. I'm starting with five selections, but I'm sure I'll complete all eight selections, if not more! Pride and Prejudice is my favorite of Austen's stories, and I love reading P&P variations!

Update: As you can see I've added to my list, and will probably keep adding to it through out the year! I'm sure I'll be moving up to the Aficionada, 9 - 12 selections.

Review: Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor By Stephanie Barron

In my attempt to complete my Jane Austen Spin-off Challenge 2012 I started to read Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor for my Jane Austen as the main character category. I still had two categories to finish, so it was a fail on the challenge, but in the process I read some really great books! So, that's a win!!

The story, Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor is an excellent mystery! It felt like Jane wrote the book herself! According to the Editor’s Foreword that’s what it is, manuscripts written by Jane Austen, and edited by Stephanie Barron. I do not know if this is true or part of the story, but I enjoyed the story immensely!

After accepting and breaking a marriage proposal from Harris Bigg-Wither’s within a twenty-four hour period, Jane Austen accepts an invitation to visit her dear friend Isobel, Countess of Scargrave, at their country home Scargrave Manor. Newly married, her husband, the Earl is throwing a ball in her honor. During the ball, the Earl becomes violently ill and dies at dawn the next morning. Isobel’s maid disappears shortly after and is found dead a few days later. Rumors of an affair between Isobel and Viscount Payne, the Earl’s nephew begin to circulate. Isobel and the Viscount are accused of the murders, and it all looks bleak indeed! Jane races against the clock to find the true murderer!

Isobel is sent to Newgate prison to await her trial before the Bar. Newgate is a horrible place to be, and although it is not the main focus, Barron doesn’t make light of it. Isobel is in despair there.

I loved how much Jane reminded me of Elizabeth Bennett. Another person, Lieutenant Hearst, a member of the Earl’s family had strong hints of Wickham and Frank Churchill. There are also well recognized Austen lines placed here and there along the story. I loved finding them!

I was at a loss as to guess whodunit, there are a cast of characters whom all would benefit from the Earl’s death! If you enjoy a good mystery and Jane Austen, this is the book for you! With ghosts and murder, it has the feel of a gothic novel!
