The Knight Before Christmas by Marilyn Brant ~ Excerpt

Hello, my friends! I'm thrilled to have Marilyn Brant on the blog today! She has a new book, The Knight Before Christmas, and I'm so excited to read it! I love Marilyn's stories!

Marilyn has stopped by to share a little about her book with an excerpt. I hope you enjoy!

First and foremost, huge thanks to Candy for inviting me to visit So Little Time... today!! It’s been a while since I had the pleasure of celebrating a release, and it’s especially fun to get to be here to do that. :)

The excerpt below from The Knight Before Christmas is all about anticipation...  The hero of the story, Austin Knightley, is (somewhat impatiently) awaiting Emma Westwood’s arrival. The two of them have a shared history of having grown up in small-town Crystal Corners, Minnesota, but it’s been a long time since they interacted in person—and, until very recently, never as adults.

I think most of us have experienced a similar moment of excitement/nervousness while waiting to meet up with someone. The anticipation can be both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Do you have a moment that immediately springs to mind when you think about a situation like that? I always remember waiting for my now-husband to arrive before our first official date. I was doing teacher-related prep work to distract myself, LOL, but I kept wondering, “Are my instincts right about him?”

It turned out to be a fabulous day—and my last “first date”—29 years ago! I loved that he not only showed up on time (because punctuality = awesomeness IMO!!), but that he seemed to care as much about making our burgeoning relationship work out as I did.

I hope you’ll enjoy this excerpt from the story, and here’s wishing you a Happy Holiday Season!

     xox, Marilyn

Excerpt:

Austin started checking the time every five minutes from eight thirty a.m. onward.

“Why are you so antsy, man?” his brother David asked, as he got ready to take their dad to PT again. “Expecting an important phone call or something?”

“Or something,” he replied, glancing at the hall clock and willing his beloved family members to leave the house, and quickly. Emma would be arriving in less than twenty minutes.

Once David and Dad were out the door, though, there was still Mom, who was lingering in the kitchen as if she knew someone was coming over. Specifically, someone female.

“Sweetheart, before I go to the grocery store, can I make some muffins or a fruit salad or anything tasty for you?”

“Oh, no, Mom, thanks. I don’t need anything.”
“But what if someone stops by? You’ll want to be able to offer him—or her—some refreshments. At least let me brew a fresh pot of coffee.”

It was now ten minutes to nine. He swallowed. “Coffee sounds like a great idea, but why don’t you let me make it? It’s busy at the market this time of year. You’ll want to get there early to avoid the lines.”

His mother raised her brows slowly. No doubt about it, she had to have guessed that something was up. Under normal circumstances, he might have copped to it already, but working on a project with Emma Westwood wasn’t exactly a “normal” circumstance. It would be bad enough later when his mom, dad, and kid brother all returned and Emma was there in the house. But if any of them were hanging around to greet her upon arrival, it’d be awkward. And he didn’t need this to be any more awkward than it already was.

Surprisingly, Mom didn’t voice any suspicions aloud. She just kissed him on the cheek, slipped on her winter coat, and grabbed her keys and shopping list.

“I’ll be back in a few hours,” she told him. “Maybe a little longer if I stop at Adele’s Bakery. Those sugar cookies and cocoa-caramel bars that Emma brought us were delicious. I might have to get more.” She paused and smiled...almost guilelessly, but he wasn’t fooled. “Be sure to thank her if you see her before I do.”

“Of course,” Austin managed. Four minutes to nine.

Miraculously, his mother had actually pulled out of the driveway and was down the road before Emma drove up and parked in the front, curbside.

     Nine o’clock sharp.

She knocked on the door, and he forced himself to wait five full seconds before opening it.

“Good morning,” she said brightly, holding up a large white paper bag containing something indistinguishable with her right hand while she waved at him with her left.

“Good morning, Emma.” He invited her inside. “Thanks for parking on the street, but you didn’t have to.”

She laughed. “I didn’t want to block the driveway.” She nodded in the direction of the garage. “I’m sure your dad and brother are already at the gym. And I just saw your mom’s car pull out. I imagine the three of them will come back at some point.” She handed him the bag. “A snack for all of us for later. Or lunch, perhaps. I hope you like curried chicken salad on butter croissants.”

He peered into the bag and he was struck by her thoughtfulness—both with the parking and with the sandwiches. “Wow. Thank you. Did you make these?”

She shook her head. “No, but it’s a favorite of mine, and one of Jennings’s specialties.”

He felt an unwelcome bolt of jealousy. “Who’s Jennings?”

“He’s our family’s chef and the reason why I’m such a terrible cook.” She gave a short, self-deprecating laugh. “I never had to learn how to make anything substantial, not with Jennings in the house. And my few attempts at baking were truly embarrassing. Between Jennings and Adele, I always have wonderful meals and desserts. I leave the tough stuff to them.”

He didn’t know how to respond to that. He’d never thought of Emma as being unable to do anything she might want—just that there were some things she considered beneath her. Maybe that wasn’t the case, though. Maybe what he’d always pegged as Emma’s damsel-in-distress act was more a crisis in confidence.

Austin motioned for her to follow him into the kitchen, where he put her offering in the fridge and offered her a mug of hot coffee, which had just finished brewing.

“Let me take your coat,” he said, pleased that she was wearing a thicker one today, “and then let’s grab our coffees and head downstairs to the workroom. We’ve got a drafting board and tools. Today’s going to be all about planning and collecting materials, okay?”

“Okay.” She handed him her coat and then eyed him with a slight air of nervousness. “Am I, um, dressed correctly?” she asked.

He gave her a quick once over and absorbed as many details as his eyes could take in. Her perfectly manicured fingernails, which would probably get chipped to bits when they brought back the wood this afternoon and started working on it. Her golden ringlets, not a hair of which was out of place. Her big blue eyes and rosebud lips...

Oh, c’mon, Austin. Focus on her question. The clothes.

True to her word, she was dressed in an affluent version of “play clothes and shoes” or, at least, sneakers that weren’t remotely as ratty as Austin would have liked, but they were a far sight better than those pointy, ankle-breaking boots. She also had on a slightly baggy blue sweatshirt that complemented the color in her eyes and a pair of jeans that were marginally faded, although they weren’t baggy at all. In fact, they fit her extremely well.

He exhaled. “Yeah. You look great,” he murmured, not liking at all just how much he meant it.

“Thanks.” She smiled. “All right, Austin. Coffee and then work. Let’s do this!”

“Yeah, let’s do this,” he repeated.

The Knight Before Christmas
by Marilyn Brant

Book Description:

THE KNIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS is a light contemporary romance by bestselling author Marilyn Brant, who also penned the award-winning and Jane Austen-inspired novels ACCORDING TO JANE and PRIDE, PREJUDICE AND THE PERFECT MATCH.

When successful building contractor Austin Knightley returns to his hometown of Crystal Corners, Minnesota after a decade away, he vows to avoid pampered and popular types like his old high-school crush Emma Westwood—the town's biggest queen bee and self-appointed matchmaker—only to get swept into a community Christmas project she's now organizing.

With nods to Jane Austen's classic novel EMMA, this modern heroine may be a little "clueless" in the Midwest, but she's got gifts to share and plenty to learn from the boy next door, who's all grown up and handsomer than ever. Even when a snowstorm threatens to derail her plans, she's determined to figure out how to set things right and save THE KNIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

This sweet and heartwarming holiday romance is a story that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages.

The One That I Want by Marilyn Brant ~ My Review

The One That I Want by Marilyn Brant

Publication Date: July 26th, 2015
Publisher: Twelfth Night Publishing
Pages: 262
Received: e-copy from the author
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The One That I Want is the second of Marilyn Brant’s stand-alone Mirabelle Harbor Series. I have to say, I really enjoy this sweet and touching story!

Julia Crane has been a widow for about seven months now. It’s been very hard for both her and her 10-year-old daughter as Adam was an amazing husband and father. Julia is sure her heart will never love anyone as much as she loved Adam, not even by a little bit, but it’s time to start living again. Her daughter is suffering from depression, and Julia wants to show her it’s okay to be happy again after losing her father. So, she agrees to go out for drinks with her best friend, Sharlene. There she runs into her high school sweetheart! He is just the first of three men from her past that is suddenly back into her life. Things start off poorly as none of the first encounters with these gentlemen goes well! Poor Julia!

I thought Ms. Brant did a wonderful job showing a mother and daughter dealing with the grief of losing a beloved husband and father without being too heavy.

I had a little bit of a hard time getting into this story. Mainly because I wasn’t finding anything to like about these three men (which is what I think Ms. Brant intended). Until one of them starts rising to the top, and I start falling in love with him myself! I won’t name him because I don’t want to spoil it for you, but he was so sweet to Julia and her daughter. *sigh*

I liked Julia’s best friend, Sharlene, and her four brothers! I look forward to getting to know them better in the previous (Take a Chance on Me, book 1) and upcoming books in the Mirabelle Harbor Series!

I loved The One That I Want! I always enjoy Ms. Brant’s stories, and this was no exception!

What are you Reading? ~ July 29, 2015

What are you Reading? is my weekly Wednesday meme! You are welcome to join me, just answer the following questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you plan on reading next?

What am I currently reading? I'm going to start The One That I Want (Mirabelle Harbor, Book 2) by Marilyn Brant. I usually love Marilyn's work, so I'm looking forward to reading this!

What did I recently finish reading? I stayed up late into the night finishing Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I really enjoyed most of the book, but the ending...  It left me terribly upset, and, needless to say, I had trouble sleeping the rest of the night.  I'm not sure if I will read the rest of the series. I swore I wouldn't, but I am curious about the rest.

What do I plan on reading next? I'm not sure... I'll let you know next week. I'm pretty drained now.

Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet by Marilyn Brant ~ My Review

Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet by Marilyn Brant

Publication Date: July 15th, 2014
Publisher: White Soup Press
Pages: 236
Received: e-copy from the author for my honest review.
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet is a super fun and cute story!  This is a sequel to Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Match (which I loved! See review here), but it stands up quite nicely on its own! Although both books are a modern Pride and Prejudice variation of sorts, they don't follow the original storyline closely. In Pride, Prejudice & the Perfect Bet you will find Jane and Bingley’s story.

The story begins at the wedding of Beth Bennet and Will Darcy, were Jane is the Maid of Honor and Bingley is the Best Man. Unfortunately, at the moment they are not getting along so well. At the engagement party they were getting along just fine, in fact more than fine. Until Jane overhears a conversation Bingley is having, boasting of his conquests and how weddings are a perfect place to find action. He even makes a bet that he will score first!  Well, Jane's not about to help him win that bet!

Bingley has no idea what turned Jane off, but when he finally figures it out, he works hard to correct her opinion of him. Soon Bingley, the confirmed bachelor, starts falling for Jane. My heart breaks for Bingley when Jane’s ex comes back into the picture.

I loved how Ms. Brant put fun names into this story! It was entertaining to recognize familiar names, including myself!! And how she mixed up Austen's characters a bit, like Jane’s ex is named Willoughby. I thought it was hilarious how Willoughby’s poetry drove Jane away. As Elizabeth Bennet said:

“But if it be only a slight, thin sort of inclination, I am convinced that one good sonnet will starve it entirely away” ~ Pride & Prejudice

I always love Ms. Brant’s sense of humor and her writing style. She is one of my favorite authors!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet! It was a fun quick read and left me with warm fuzzy feels! I would highly recommend this story! I loved it, and I bet you will too!

W... W... W... Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB of Should be Reading. To play along, just answer the following questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you'll read next?

What am I currently reading?  I'm currently reading Forbidden by Syrie James & Ryan M. James. I don't usually read paranormal stories, but I'm really enjoying this story!

What did I recently finish reading? I finished reading Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet by Marilyn Brant. I loved this fun romantic comedy! Being part of a bet Bingley makes doesn't sit to well with Jane, and they get off on the wrong foot right away!

What do I think I'll read next? I'm going to try to read The Giver by Lois Lowry for reals this time! LOL! Unless, of course, I change my mind. ;)

W... W... W... Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB of Should be Reading. To play along, just answer the following questions:

  • What are you currently reading?

  • What do you think you'll read next?

What am I currently reading? I am currently reading Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Betby Marilyn Brant. I'm thoroughly enjoying this story! This is Jane and Bingley's story in this modern day Pride and Prejudice. It's a sequel to Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Match (my review).

What did I recently finish reading? Well, I haven't posted a WWW post for the last two weeks, so I have a few books that I finished. Three of the books were part audio books and I listen to them while driving and read them while I wasn't. That whisper-sync is pretty awesome! Here's what I read:

Jane Austen's First Love by Syrie James. It's wonderful book about a fifteen-year-old Jane Austen. My review will be up on Friday.

Monument 14 by Emmy Laybourne. This apocalyptic story was pretty good. It's about a group of kids who are on the way to school when a horrific storm hits and they have to seek shelter in a Greenway store (which is like a big box store with everything in it). I was surprised at the wide range of ages of the kids in this story. From five to seventeen-years-old. I didn't think I would read the next book in the series, but it got really good and then it had a major cliffhanger!! So, you got it... my next read was:

Monument 14: Sky on Fire by Emmy Laybourne. This book was really good! More action! I think the first book was more of a setup, explaining what's going on and why. Now, this second book is "the escape". There is a third book, but this one has a good ending. By that, I mean it felt finished. Complete. I do want to read the third because I like these kids and I want to hear more. Plus, there are a couple of loose ends.

The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die by April Henry. This was kinda intense! I really enjoyed it too! Not my typical read, but I do like survival stories. This YA story is about a girl who wakes up on the floor of a cabin in the woods. She has no idea who she is or what's going on, but she knows she's in danger, and she can hear two men talking about getting rid of her. When she escapes, she has to figure out who she is and why someone is trying to kill her! It's a fast-paced thriller.

The last three were the audiobooks.

What do I think I'll read next? I kinda want to read The Giver by Lois Lowry since the movie will be out this Friday! :)

What am I currently reading? I am reading Jane Austen's First Love by Syrie James. I started this last week but before I got very far into it, I put it aside. Instead, I worked on my bloggiesta list, and decided to read a book for the course I'm taking online.

What did I recently finish reading? I finished The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. This is the book I read for an English Country House Literature course I'm taking. It was amusing! I was surprised that it didn't feel like it had been written in the late 1800's!

What do I think I'll read next?  My plan is to read Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet by Marilyn Brant. This is Bingley and Jane's story, and the sequel to Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Match (my review). I'm excited to read this! I love Marilyn Brant's books!

The Road to You by Marilyn Brant ~ My Review

The Road to You by Marilyn Brant

Publication Date: September 29, 2013
Publisher: Twelfth Night Books
Pages: 300
Received: ARC e-copy from author
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Sometimes the only road to the truth...is one you’ve never taken.

I really enjoyed reading The Road to You! It was a pleasure for me to step back in time and take a trip down Route 66 in this coming-of-age romantic mystery!

When Aurora finds her brother’s journal (her brother and his best friend, Jeremy have been missing and presumed dead for two years now) she turns to the only other person whom she can trust to help her on her quest to find out what happen to them... Donovan. The thing is... Donovan, who is Jeremy’s older brother, is also the last person she wants to be around. He makes her nervous, every nerve in her body comes alive just thinking about him. Together they set off on an adventure with the hope of finding their brothers alive.

I love the chemistry between Aurora and Donovan! Aurora has always been attracted to Donovan, and he’s always felt there was something special about Aurora, but in the past she was too young. Spending so much time on the road together only intensify these feelings, but they need to put them aside to concentrate on the task at hand; finding Gideon and Jeremy.

Donovan, who Aurora calls Mr. Tall, Dark and Intense, is really very sweet and protective of Aurora - even though he’s a tough guy on the outside.

I liked Aurora’s intuition; her ability to read people. She can see much deeper into people than what’s on the surface. (It’s a quality that appeals to Donovan too.) Aurora always felt everyone might be wrong about Gideon; that maybe he was still alive. After all his body was never found, and the investigation ended all-too-soon to Aurora's way of thinking.

I also loved that The Road to You is set in the late 70’s. Aurora and Donovan are without many of the conveniences we have today, like cell phones, internet and GPS. To do research, they would have to find a library in whatever town they were in and study old newspapers that were stored on microfiche.

It was fun trying to figure out the mystery with the clues in the journal and the information Aurora and Donovan picked up along the way. The Road to You kept me guessing all the way to the end!

I loved The Road to You! I found myself wanting to listen to some of my favorite bands from the 70’s! I definitely would recommend this one!
